I sell 1.3's that I have been able to purchase from the Pi Foundation, just want to be clear on that. 👍
We’re talking long-term bitcoin savings here. For a bitcoin account that you spend more frequently from and store not as large of a balance, you can make a good argument for using an SE-equipped wallet. But for your long-term stash… If you secure your bitcoin using an SE-equipped device, you will still always need to keep an analog copy of the private key as a backup for the digital copy, right? So now you have two copies of the seed / private key to protect, and what do you do with both of them? It doesn’t make sense to store the seed with the HWW b/c what if fire/flood/etc? So you need another location. But you just don’t want to leave a bare, unprotected seed in a safe deposit box or other remote location (unless perhaps if its part of a multi-sig setup), so then you likely end up adding a BIP39 passphrase to the seed to protect it. But the goal of the BIP39 passphrase is to protect the seed, which is also the hardware wallet’s job, and then using the passphrase with the hardware wallet is overkill and a pain with most HWWs. So why not just let the analog copy of the key be the only copy of the seed you need to worry about, because again, this is your long term savings and you won’t be accessing the key very frequently. Now think carefully of the best way to secure that key — maybe you do add a passphrase? Or maybe use it as part of a multisig quorum where you have redundancy in case a key is somehow lost or stolen. Not all bitcoin storage use cases are the same, and I firmly believe our model makes much more sense for long term saving. More info at:

Multiple people have privately reached out about the latest RHR -- just so it's out there publicly, I don't agree that SEs are always additive, and I think there is a lot more nuance to this subject than most people appreciate.
Someone in our community designed this sticker and it generally sums up my feelings.
Given different life experiences, people are going to have different opinions, and that's OK. 🙂

Are you like me and love the nostr:npub17tyke9lkgxd98ruyeul6wt3pj3s9uxzgp9hxu5tsenjmweue6sqq4y3mgl project but don’t know how to code and don’t have a lot of sats to donate?
No worries! You can still help by spreading awareness!
Every year more people dive down the #Bitcoin rabbit hole asking for recommendations, and we can do a lot by making sure the answers are sprinkled with the joy of using the nostr:npub17tyke9lkgxd98ruyeul6wt3pj3s9uxzgp9hxu5tsenjmweue6sqq4y3mgl

I am obviously biased, but I think your engineering brain would appreciate some of the design choices we have made with our project. If you’re curious to learn more, you can read more about our approach here:

I appreciate your response, i just think if you had an extended dialogue with nostr:npub17tyke9lkgxd98ruyeul6wt3pj3s9uxzgp9hxu5tsenjmweue6sqq4y3mgl he might have a different opinion about whether using a secure element is “additive”. It was invoking this argument that to me felt like a lack of steelmanning the Seedsigner perspective.
Even with coldcard you’re probably storing an unencrypted analog seed phrase backup somewhere right? Steel plate or otherwise, so the argument that having seedQR laying around as a point of insecurity doesn’t feel fully thought through IMO.
As a tool, Seedsigner offers a unique FOSS DIY solution that can play an integral role in many highly thoughtful approaches to cold storage. I won’t casually accept framing that the project is somehow lesser than coldcard (as implied by your statement that secure element is “additive”) when in fact many would disagree with this framing.
Love you bud
It's all tradeoffs. SE comes with a lot of unacknowledged, ongoing trust in the company implementing and distributing devices that incorporate one (or more) SEs. I feel as though there is frequently a lot of nuance lost in these discussions that end up favoring the inherent marketing of SEs being "secure". I admittedly have a unique, less common perspective given my personal experiences. Both of you have made significant & valued contributions to SeedSigner over time, in different ways, so I havr nothing but love and appreciation for you both.
I got a delivery.

👀
The nostr:npub17tyke9lkgxd98ruyeul6wt3pj3s9uxzgp9hxu5tsenjmweue6sqq4y3mgl manual installation instructions have now been updated thanks to yours truely.
I'm quite happy to contribute to this project. In addition to having a nice product, they also:
- have a nice development pace
- are friendly and helpful towards new contributors
- have an excellent review process
- Add regression tests for issues that come up
If you have extra sats to throw around, the maintainers have done (and continue to do) the work to earn them. I'm not a core contributor, but we'll see if that might someday change.

Definitely applicable to BIP39 passphrases... 😬
Not "copying" per se, but yes, just write the new image to a MicroSD card using an authoring tool like Balena Etcher, put the card in your signer, and off you go. 👍
Thanks for the heads up, yesterday morning we were updating some file names, which threw off the bot. If you look at the current status, we are back in the green. 👍

I want to build my own seedsigner but don’t want to/know how to do the hammering/soldering things I read about ~1 year ago when building.
Is there an easier way to build today that doesn’t require that?
I would consider either buying a Zero 1.3 with the GPIO pins already attached as part of a signer kit, or buying a Zero W with the pins already attached to from a more general retailer & removing the wireless capability.
It's possible that bluewallet composed the transaction using inputs that resulted it no change, kind of like at the store when something rings up to exactly $10. Also possible Sparrow used a different combination of inputs that resulted in change. Can't say there's anything malicious going on without more evidence, but great on you for having such a sharp eye.
Bitcoiners have undervalued this self custody tool.

Not sure I would want to coinjoin via a corporate tool? Seems like it could involve a fair amount of trust potentially.
Best iOS Nostr experience? Damus killed my data plan and using Primal is feeling like it's working about 50% of the time -- my own posts don't show up on my profile page, and other issues. Are there any options that don't require pasting my nsec into a browser, or should I just stick to Damus on laptop?

We have a new release out!
There's soooo much to cover with this release. Going to try to point out as many of the big details as I can while keeping this post brief-ish.
First thing: Please show our contributors some love AND demonstrate the power of Nostr and zap the crap out of this post. All zaps are forwarded to our development fund that goes to reward our contributors.
General note: Our release cadence tends to be less frequent than other tools -- this is a natural facet of our work as a volunteer project, and that we have a more technically conservative posture given the importance of what we're helping bitcoiners safeguard.
Headline feature: reproducible builds. Anyone in the world should be able to reproduce and validate that the software we're releasing is in line with what is in our relevant code repositories.
Big quality of life improvements:
. Power-to-Splash: ~12 seconds
. Vastly improved live camera preview
. Noticeably more responsive controls
. Brightness adjustment reminder
. MicroSD removal reminder
Something big for the Uncle Jim SeedSigner maxis out there: Formalized support for SettingsQR! Transform SeedSigner from a featureful, more technical device into a dead-simple signer for grandma, and then back again with a couple of non-private QR codes.
For devs and everyone else who is on-mission to preach and teach the SeedSigner gospel: Screenshot generator! Create pixel-perfect renderings of most UI screens for explainers, tutorials and even development use cases.
All of these updates have come from more contributors than we've had involved in any previous release.
If you are receiving value directly from SeedSigner; or if you simply understand the importance of a discreet, DIY, non-corporate, FOSS, cold storage signing tool for the global bitcoin ecosystem -- please make a donation to our development fund.
I will be digging into the above features and updates in the coming weeks to provide more detail on their value, but for now grab your signer and give 0.7.0 a try!
1 SeedSigner = ♾ Cosigners
Thank you everyone!
