web adverising is a course, limits what users are allowed to say to appease big corp advertisers.

Embarrassing failure of an orange-pilling last night.

I was at a neighborhood party and a neighbor asked me about bitcoin. We talked for a bit and he asked me how to get some. I said I'll send you some right now and you can send me cash via zelle.

I tell him to download Phoenix wallet. So far so good. I fired up Strike, loaded up $100 and tried to send. Failure #1: the $100 apparently needs to clear before I can send it anywhere. First time that's happened to me and I use Strike somewhat regularly.

Ok, no problem, I'll just send it from my node. So I fire up nostr:npub1xnf02f60r9v0e5kty33a404dm79zr7z2eepyrk5gsq3m7pwvsz2sazlpr5 , scan the QR, and hit send, and it spins.....and spins......and spins......and spins......and then times out.

No indication of why it couldn't complete before timeout. I have plenty of overall outbound capacity, and no trouble connecting to the node. I guess my set of channels aren't well enough connected or the outbound capacity isn't in the right channels. Failure #2.

So at this point I'm really starting to look like an asshole.

Final attempt, I guess I'll try sending on chain from my node. So I ask him to switch to an on chain address and send the sats...success! Well, only on my side.

Phoenix gave him no notification of receipt and the balance didn't show up in his wallet until after it was confirmed. Failure #3.

Needless to say, this guy is probably not too impressed.

LN still needs more capacity, especially >$100 amounts are difficult to route, but with increasing adoption it will get better I hope.

Musk can never implement "free speech" on X, because X is a platform. He can implement "legal speech", that is all.

The funny thing is that in the US, the right of the platforms not to be punished for content they do not create is legally protected by the famous section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996.

So all censorship done by Twitter, Facebook, and so on, is indeed politically motivated (even when they argue that advertisers are the ones who demand it).

In fact, it's quite clear looking at what happened this past years, that section 230, or rather the threat of removing it, has become leverage for "special interests" in Government to influence (I don't think many of them need "coercing") content "moderation", to the point that platforms are indeed acting as publishers now. This was Trump's argument, which I 100% agree with and I had personally concluded myself before his attemp to remove s. 230.

On the other extreme, Biden advocated for the removal of s. 230 for the exact opposite reasons: he outright wants to legislate what is legal content and what isn't, beyond what is already there (CP, exposure of adult content to minors, etc).

Publish what we tell you to publish, or we will remove section 230 and your protections will be gone. Then, we'll pass legislation regulating "content". Policing with 100% effectiveness is impossible, so we will go after you and shut you down.

And that's exactly what too many here want to walk into WILLINGLY and without any need whatsoever.

Soon Musk has to conform with stricter EU regulations as well, Digital Services Act. We will see how this plays out.

Fun fact: with the military march song "Links 2 3 4", the band wanted to position itself as a left-leaning band in the early 2000s to appease woke media 😂

nostr ecosystem has still a long way to go for people to get onbard, tldr ux is bad.

1/ learning about is painful. there’s plenty of doc, but it’s very dev oriented, so boring for the pleb.

2/ “create an account” is stressful, first you need to understand the concepts of pub/priv keys because now to signin on your social all you need is a key, no more email+pw. counter-intuitively this sounds more like some sketchy stuff rather than the security & privacy shield it’s supposed to provide.

3/ find a client, and boy it’s hard. there’s plenty of them out there, if you wanna stick to one it’s tough to find the right client that works for you. after some experimentation i came to the conclusion that primal is the least worse.

4/ relays are really bad from a user perspective. it means having to do your homework on what relays do, how they talks to what clients and when do they sync with each other in order to maximize your chances of getting ALL of the nostr network, in real time. this is for me the biggest hurdle in nostr.

4/ I’ve been on nostr for 24h and I still have a hard time understanding how this all works. you can’t refresh your feed like you would on web2, which doesn’t give this sense of “fresh news delivered” that web2 provides. search is clunky, i can’t like posts on web and i can’t follow people on android so it’s pretty much buggy, and so on.

no way my muggle siblings are doing all that. we’re far from mass adoption, but as long as we keep building on top we’ll eventually be able to offer the comfort of use people or used to, and therefore expecting from a social network.

The relay configuration is a bit concerning, too complicated for plebs and creates reach anxiety, are other nostr users able to see my notes at all? Can my notes dissappear suddenly if relays are shut down?
