This is a very broad statement but I understand the spirit in which it was made, and I don't totally disagree. All of the "people are nicer here" just means we're early and folks using the protocol are passionate about it. There is absolutely nothing about nostr that fixes hashtag activism nonsense or the spread of misinformation.
Where I would disagree with the statement is that the social media side of nostr is just one use case. On its own, that utility is very limited, put well by the quoted article. But it won't be on its own. Nostr can be a lot of things and to say we're scratching the surface is putting it very lightly. The social use case works. Now we get to see how that will be integrated in to all the future possibilities of the protocol.
I look at the collection of Twitter clones currently populating the nostr app universe and I see a bunch of devs digging in, messing around, and learning. I don't see anyone posturing like this is the end game.
I've been hanging out on satellite.earth lately -- early and has some missing features, but updating quickly
Hang on tight, plebs. This is happening fast. nostr:note13ma5sjxkudlcs9amhwfa74n6sm6chxjpkhvhcaek0g6sfv5w9s8q8smelr
For routing fees, yeah. One of the ways that Lightning is inherently centralizing.
And open source
http://Satellite.earth has quickly become my go-to desktop #nostr client, and the mobile interface is quite nice as well.
Just made my first post in the Communities section under n/Parenting. Good stuff nostr:npub1lunaq893u4hmtpvqxpk8hfmtkqmm7ggutdtnc4hyuux2skr4ttcqr827lj
Raising kids in a changing world order
Hey #Nostr fam - I love the idea of having this community here!
I have two sons - 7 yrs old and 4 yrs old. My 7 year old is on the autism spectrum and has limitations in communication and social skills, but he's advanced with numbers. My 4 year old thus far appears to be neurotypical and highly social/communicative, but also appears to be ahead in reading and math. He's recently discovered a love for Legos, and yesterday he correctly assembled a marble maze that was rated for ages 8+.
We are in a public school system that we are quite happy with, and it was largely the reason that we settled where we did. My 7 yr old is getting great support with notable progress, and my 4 yr old appears to have options ahead of him to help him progress where his talents are without isolating him socially (and hopefully without pressuring him to maintain any sort of lofty expectations).
My questions for other parents in the community: What do you see as the skills that will be sought-after in the decades to come?
I'm constantly on the lookout for that venn diagram where my kids' leanings and talents intersect with community and industry needs -- like when I was coming of age in the 90s and the IT industry was the big pull. STEM seems like the obvious umbrella to stay under, but it's a tremendously large umbrella.
My instincts say coding (in general, less specific, more about fundamental software building blocks), AI (architecture, prompting), and finance (to enable good decisions early).
What are other parents doing?
Wen buy gas with #bitcoin
As money becomes tighter and the fiat crisis plays out, we can expect no less.
Exit the system
Hopefully it’s also to learn to prompt AI! What will coding be when our kids are adults?
Just the early days. Nostr is decentralized and immutable, so in that way it is very aligned with the Bitcoin ethos. Nostr clients also tend to use the Lightning network for ‘zap’ micropayments, which is a scaling solution for Bitcoin.
All that said, nothing about Nostr requires Bitcoin. And Nostr is also a very capable protocol with a use case only now being explored. There’s room here for infinitely more than Bitcoin.
I think I'm going to try something new for my next phone.
Smaller. Less useful. Decent camera. Good enough for web apps.
I don't want to WANT to use my phone. I don't want to marvel at the screen quality. I don't want to watch videos on it. I want it to have the utility I need with much less entertainment. I don't want it to be stressful to use but I don't want it to be so nice that I want to use it all the time.
My life always improves with less screens.
Now to hunt for the right phone to fit the bill.

I had the opposite problem switching to iPhone — needed to install Google keyboard. Maybe it's just a comfort thing 🤷🏼♂️
Yikes man, my heart goes out to you and your family
Mobile web interface for satellite.earth is very nice. ♥️
