2.5 years ago I left X and swapped it for Bluesky, and the urge to go back to X completely disappeared, total ignorance... but since I switched to Nostr I have a constant urge to lurk on X or Bluesky again, because Nostr offers almost no interesting content regarding my interests and hobbies - except for digital gold, market-anarchism and conspiracy theories

I think I'll pack up in a few weeks and move on again... :/

Not a huge deal, we all have our preferences, all the best, hope to see you back someday!

where do you plan on going?

Probably more offline :) I've probably spent too much time and energy on social networks in the last few years, I mean building and talking about them... so this is mostly about leaving that topic and focusing on something more meaningful for me

I don't want to migrate anywhere in particular anymore, so I'll probably re-activate my AT Protocol account, make one on ActivityPub and use all three (AT Protocol / Nostr / ActivityPub), and cross-post. Each of these networks offers something interesting for me.

I've been seriously considering setting up a Mastodon acct, just to try it out...

But Nostr's experience of actually owning my own identity is too powerful to go back from, for me personally.

I didn't use any kind of mcoroblogging platform before Nostr and I guess I'm willing to leave it at this until it grows or dies completely.

Devs are still pretty active, so I guess the "canary in the coal mine" for me will be when people like nostr:nprofile1qqsyvrp9u6p0mfur9dfdru3d853tx9mdjuhkphxuxgfwmryja7zsvhqpzamhxue69uhhv6t5daezumn0wd68yvfwvdhk6tcpz9mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejj7qgswaehxw309ahx7um5wghx6mmd9u2mk7fe decide to throw in the towel.

mastodon is pretty cool, easy to run your own instance, but I ended up on a ton of blocklists just for having a nft pfp lol

Yeah NGL I've been having some "censorious" interactions across the bridge recently as well...

Maybe just stick around here until people figure out that "system-wide banning" isn't a technical goal to strive towards.

goodbye

When I migrated to AT Protocol, I thought it was the last time, in the beginning it looked very promising. But I know that it was just my infinite naivety. The institutionalization of society is at such a level that any meaningful decentralized network will be suppressed as soon as the masses rush in. Having one favorite and optimizing for it is a path that leads nowhere, because one will inevitably be disappointed.

The only path that crystallizes for me as suitable now will be to be present on multiple networks and have a reasonable distance from each. To accept that nothing is perfect, that the ideal social network is simply not possible to create, in today's society, and to take the best from each.

Makes sense. There are so few people here. You could literally fit the whole daily-active English-speaking Kind1 community into a church. And if it was one of those mega-churches then you'd still have lots of empty seats.

I feel you. But move on to what?

I do Nostr and Reddit and stay away from rage-bait/click-bait social networks.

My approach is to keep making the experience better so ultimatly other interest groups join Nostr. If that means in the end i will be disappointed so be it. At least i tried.

Curious why stick with Reddit instead of Lemmy?

Never heard of it

Nostr and Reddit are my only two active socials right now, as well. Reddit because of the depth of users it's the only place where more "local" subjects and interests are discussed.

They're very different experiences though.... Microblogging is a very different thing from Reddit's "forum post" model.

Why move completely. Nostr is a long term project. I appreciate your input here.

Yes but nostr is fading over time. User numbers are at their lowest in 3.5 years, content is getting sparser and sparser.

The long-term project thesis only works if numbers are going up, even gradually. If numbers are going down then if you extend the term they just go down further!

Do you like nostr protocol? I think that existing content shouldn’t be the reason to not be here. You can start creating the better one.

And btw nostr is not only social network…

I like the protocol. I'd want to build on it and push it forward... but right now it feels like forcing myself to be naive again. I'd spend months building something that might not grow, or worse - watch it grow into something centralized. I don't see how I can be useful to Nostr right now.

Yes, there are other social networks... so I'll be everywhere and stop endorsing any specific one

Ok. Got it

Any decentralised protocol you prefer?

For private transactions Monero, for smart contracts and decentralized finance Ethereum :)

I was referring to communication and social media. None of those is very interesting to be, monero is too small (yet), eth has broken incentives (personal opinion, don’t feel the need to disprove me)

Yes, I know... I said the obvious, I don't see it so clearly within communication or social media. I like a lot of protocols, but I have no universal answers here

I'd have a hard time envisioning a scenario where Nostr becomes centralized... The architecture really seems to resist that.

I'd be more concerned about whether it ever gets traction in the first place.

he probably just wants more clout than the current nostr can give him

also trashing nostr while being inside nostr is a safe way to generate drama and followers inside nostr so that might suit him too

I don't know what you mean by clout, but I meant content and interactions around my interests. On Bluesky I could join in discussions with authors of favorite javascript frameworks, with my favorite pixelart artists or 3D modelers, talk about piracy, growing cannabis, movies, discuss with Marxists... There was always something that somehow moved me forward.

> also trashing nostr while being inside nostr

I'm used to criticizing and pushing forward that I'm involved in... it doesn't make much sense to me criticize something I don't use and don't care about. If you knew me, you would understand that this is a pretty consistent stance :)

The best discussions on Nostr are about the future of Nostr 😅
