We need the Nostr version of YouTube, except better.
We should make them obsolete
They don't really have an incentive to promote content that only costs them money to show. I don't think Nostr is going to solve that problem. Hosting isn't free. Someone will have to pay for the resources. People would still complain if they had the option to cover the full cost themselves for equal treatment from the algos. But maybe they should have the option. I just don't think people understand the true cost of that sort of availability for audio/video.

Then why aren't more people paying for YouTube Premium? People aren't conditioned to pay anymore. YouTube would go broke if they did this today. And there would be almost no content available if you did it on Nostr. I'm not saying it shouldn't be done, only that it isn't such a simple issue.
I agree with your principles here. But I disagree that enough others do to make it a profitable model today.

I would love to agree, but my very rough research didn't convince me. We have to be careful not to confuse imagination and excitement with reality. It may just be that Nostr is a parallel alternative for a long time (which is a noble goal). I don't see it displacing YT anytime soon though. I want to be wrong on this. Fuck I really do.
I don't pay for premium. But that's more on principal, all their premium features are easily available just by using the brave browser, I don't think the analogy of premium and paying users is correct, I am happy to pay for content just not to YouTube.
As a counter argument all of Netflix's content is paid and people do pay for it
Also ad models can evolve where it's the creators that get the ad revenue and not the platform, incentivizing them to let users stream their content for free and bearing the hosting cost for their videos.
These are not very outlandish ideas, it's just that YouTube has spoilt us and made us believe that this is the only way things can work.
I understand that I could just leech and block their way of paying for my use (even though it's a constant fight). I could probably also pirate anything on Netflix. I pay because I understand that things cost money. I'm always willing to pay in place of ads if given the opportunity.
Your principle is quite interesting. You're unwilling to pay them anything but quite willing to benefit from their labor and investment.

I do not wish my money to go into helping build deeper tracking mechanisms for youtube. I do pay creators I like when I have the option to pay them outside.

The analogy literally is correct, by the way. I'm paying for the service. People who allow the ads are too in a different, more annoying way. You're consuming resources that the rest of us have to cover. That's the worst of the worst. It isn't like the resources are free when you block the ads. You're just leeching.

I feel like video hosting is the final boss that must be slayed. nostr:npub1wf4pufsucer5va8g9p0rj5dnhvfeh6d8w0g6eayaep5dhps6rsgs43dgh9's latest is very promising in that regard.
Now we just need a client that implements it, and better discovery tools for finding interesting videos.

The I pretty much never see YouTube content unless someone posts about it on nostr anyhow.
I use NewPipe on my phone and have UBlock Origin as a browser extension on my laptop. I never see ads. Also, I hate Youtube.

YT is the only fiat content platform I still use reluctantly for its content. I often ask all content creators I watch on YT to post audio on Fountain. Canโt wait to get rid of the last one.
