Long-time Bitcoin Core developer (not one of the bad ones) and US citizen Jon Atack has been detained in El Salvador. His phone and passport have been taken from him.

Any reasons given?

so far only info is Stacy saying "His neighbor call the police on him over a dispute" and that they're following the case.

Wtf. This pisses me off

It's all good until they come for you...

He should give us more Infos what happened

From Grok: The detention stemmed from a dispute with a neighbor, who accused Atack of "violence against women," leading to his arrest under El Salvador’s legal framework. According to X posts, the police were described as treating Atack respectfully, and he had access to a lawyer. The case was characterized as a verbal disagreement rather than a state-targeted action against him as a Bitcoin developer. Posts on X indicated that Atack was expected to be released soon after the incident, though no specific updates confirmed his release or further details about the resolution.

The real story is, in short, she falsely accused him of calling her stupid, called the cops and pressed charged, and he was arrested and could have been imprisoned for 8 years according to El Salvadorian law. But Bitcoin Twitter made a stink about it, so he got released. So, I won't be moving there!

Arrested for calling someone stupid? Holy shit

Yeah thats scary 🫣

True. That's a "Nope!" kind of situation to me.

Right I would never want to live there

Seems like there have been a handful of news items lately indicating El Salvador may not be the bitcoin paradise, or any paradise, that it had been portrayed as by some.

Kudos to those who remain skeptical of political heroes.

8 years calling somebody stupid!

The "hate speech" laws that the Globalists are trying to get every western nation to adopt will have a similar effect, They really don't want you having an opinion that differs from the accepted narrative....

To be clear: I mentioned his background/citizenship for context only. I do not have any reason to think the arrest is related to his work on Bitcoin.

Wow, justice is swift in El Salvador!

Doubt you'd be released this quick in the US (if arrested).

(Hoping it works this well for everyone, and not just Jon)
