Though Koreans live with the threat of nuclear war, their gov’t isn’t actively trying to slow kill them.
Guessing it sums up to diet. Processed food consumption likely matches up closely to this chart.
It’s a chart crime. Using percentage instead of populating instead of per 1000 capita would completely change the order of the countries. USA would be very low.
Wouldn’t percentage make more sense i stead of per capita for looking at this type of data? If you’re wanting to look at countries as a whole instead of specific demographics within those countries? Changes the outcome quite a bit. nostr:npub1kyk7ac33apd7cx0nun3laevf84zfhr8pt8kj4h8v7cpx9t72d4gqkyea0g (yes I’m bored at work)

New Zealand not on that list.......hard to believe.
Mental health challenges are experienced very differently worldwide. Antidepressant use is not just a reflection of individual well-being but also a product of broader societal and environmental influences.
Australia has a very high awareness and accessibility to mental health services. Societal perspectives on mental health may influence whether people choose to seek help.
Universal healthcare or insurance coverage can lead to easier access to the medication.
I do note Iceland has a much higher obesity rate than the rest of Europe but not like the 70% we seen in Aus and US.
This is doctor's fault, the chart could also be "big pharma influence on doctors by country"
Funny, i have pretty much switched to a korean diet unknowingly... started eating smoked trout at about every meal with kimchi and nuts and damn if it isn't delicious! And I feel about the best on that diet.
I'm familiar with multiple countries on top of that list and the depression there is solved by alcoholism.
I can think of three primary drivers:
1. Chronic illness per 1000.
2. Penetration of the idea that depression is ‘a chemical imbalance’ among doctors.
3. Penetration if the same idea among patients.

Humans need pain and discomfort to properly feel and appreciate rewards. In many western, especially US, countries, we live in a comfort-only, instant and constant dopamine hit society. It’s too easy and too comfortable. So people feel depressed, and they don’t know why. Then the drug makers literally write the book on how to diagnose mental health disorders. The incentives are all wrong, and the doctors are (unbeknownst to them) trained on biased science, and they do what they think is best for the patient, and what is easiest and most rewarding for them, and write a prescription. Over, and over, and over again.
