Don't get psyoped into believing that running a Lightning node is hard. It's not.

Most people just wants to sell you something.

I agree 100%.

I set up an umbrel node with Alby. Not sure if I did it correctly or even what that exactly means, but it’s set up.

Nothing is hard if you got time 😉

Being curious and trying out new freedoms won't do you any harm. Demotivating and unmotivated people should keep their mouths shut.

Is not hard, but you can loose some sats.

I think I needed to hear that

I’m trying but have been having a hard time. Am dumb.

I don’t know if it counts but Alby hub was very easy.

Definitely counts

Old laptop->Two terabyte SSD->start os -> Be Ungovernable

https://docs.start9.com/0.3.5.x/diy/

Not really. Now you just have an old laptop that will stop working in a few weeks and taxes left to pay because of unrealized gains.

Monero fixes that.

I don't use schitcoins & texas are theft.

No KYC!!! & Tor browser

But use whatever you want, free market is king 👑

😘

True and mainly they want to sell you an inferior solution than lightning.

Enterprise grade ops on lightning are still a challenge, but that's because you're trying to fit new technology into existing frameworks.

Nah, losing your money on a mismanaged node is a far higher risk than using a custodial wallet, depending on how sophisticated the user is.

It's been a while since I've set up my node, though. Maybe the newer software is a lot easier/safer.

Here’s a DIY video for anyone interested. Set one up and checkout #AlbyHub if you want something easy to use for your first time.

Everyone’s a scammer.

Absolutely! ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️

As big financial institutions move past the base layer and into Lightning, the FUD will come hard, heavy, and fast.

You spend too much time in bitcoin circles. Setting up a lightning node is not hard. Managing connectivity and liquidity and running it always on and available on clear net while making sure you don’t lose funds regularly is not easy for the average person. I have nothing to sell.

IMO, it's irresponsible to convince non tech savvy people into running a lightning node. If you don't know how to manage and back up a Linux server, you're seriously playing with fire putting money on one.

Just use a damn mobile wallet or something.

A mobile “node in phone” lightning wallet is as far as I would recommend for most people I know, and even that is unnecessary for the average person who would probably only use Lightning for small purchases. There are a few of my friends that could run a full always-on lightning node, but it’s overkill unless you run a business or just like tinkering with tech.

At this point, I just Uncle Jim my friends. I have a fairly decent routing node set up and just have them connect to my lndhub instance with Zeus. Ezpz, they don't even need to worry about liquidity

It’s not hard to start, but it’s hard to self diagnose hardware failures and perform recovery when failures occur.

I still have funds stuck on chain because I don’t know how to use chantools to sweep timelocked funds from a force close between my node and personal Blixt wallet.

“Just use the command line”

The inevitable problems are where running a node is hard, and the average person will struggle to recover their money.

Sounds annoying to do but I’d like to try it

When I was running a well oiled node back a few years ago it was pretty hard. I'm sure things are better now. I managed all my channels via the terminal and manually re-balance like every day. If there is a sort of automatic re-balancing algo that optimizes for fees and high traffic connections then it would be pretty easy. Also, I'm sure the backup solutions are better now. If you lost your HDD back then for some reason or your node state was compromised then your balance was basically lost. 😅 but it was exciting though to see lightning development happen and watch the network grow.

let me try

so easy just download chantools, ssh in your Linux terminal to recover your chanstatus borked

Everyone can do it duh

Connected my @umbrel a few days ago. Super easy plug and play option for those less tech savvy.

Tell me more

running a routing node is tho

Or, you know, you could just use Monero, which is Layer 1 and not have to worry about issues that would come with trying to run Layer 2 nodes and managing channels and all that shit.

nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm can definitely make it easier to manage (I run a hub on Umbrel). If you’re a business owner and have a billion other things to manage as well, and just need it to work 24/7 with 99.999% uptime it can be a challenge running on prem, but they have a cloud option too.

Curious to learn how to do the same. I run on a macOS

I’m not sure if you can run Alby Hub itself on macOS. Umbrel and Start9 can be installed on a mini PC and they have Alby installers. I access my Alby Hub on Umbrel with my MacBook. Go to nostr:npub1rxysxnjkhrmqd3ey73dp9n5y5yvyzcs64acc9g0k2epcpwwyya4spvhnp8 profile and find the video on Alby, it’s good.

Agree with many of the rebuttals . . . Bitcoin's Achilles heel now is MOE. Lightning UX really sucks for the average casual user.

i guess it depends on what you mean by "running a lightning node."

It really depends^^
