I was this 🤌 close to losing $10,000 worth of Bitcoin in a social engineering attempt yesterday

I had my mouse on the SEND button

But for some reason, I paused

Maybe it's because this stuff is top of mind every day

Maybe it was luck

Maybe it was the universe looking out for me

My days are spend talking about physical security, encryption, cold storage to protect against $5 wrench attacks

But the biggest threat to Bitcoiners - imo - is AI and social engineering

Whenever this happens it’s always important to FaceTime or video call the individual, I’ve literally saved myself countless times by doing this.. it’s so easy to sim-swap these days, everyone in our lives could be targeted and used as proxy. Glad your stack is okay my friend 🫂 remain vigilant always!

Dude, even that isn’t for sure anymore.

Don’t be the guy that falls for an ai scam. Nat Brunell had a guest on a few weeks ago who was a cyber crime expert and I was really surprised by the level of sophistication these guys are at.

Fake video was a relevant topic of that pod.

It’s hard to fake a live video call, specially if you are aware you have to ask them questions ONLY they would know the answer to. There’s no faking that.

I was thinking the same

The guy I was talking to said that he had a phone call with the scammer and believed it was really him

Man, this is so creepy. I’m glad you got the lesson without the consequences on this one. With all these new messenger apps popping up every few weeks I’m sure this is going to get worse since it takes some time to get familiar with each new app
