Ran some analytics on zaps on nostr, it's quite terrible...
~95% of users have their lightning address set to a custodial wallet
~91% of all zaps by volume have gone to a custodial wallet
#[0] is the clear winner of 50% of users and 67.5% of volume

Why is this a problem?
It's just Venmo/Revolut 2.0.
The fiat world already has convenience, we that's not why we are here.
The 'average' person isn't on Nostr right now. This is a collection almost exclusively made up on hobbyists.
But for those that don't want to run a node (I get it), something like Phoniex makes some acceptable tradeoffs.

There are tons of average people on nostr. All kinds of non technical and lightly technical are using it every day.
Also AFAIK I can't receive zaps on Phoenix, as it doesn't provide an LN address.
Correct, that's a limitation of LNURL needing a web server is not conducive to 'normies', which of course pushes people to use custodial stuff.
I get the 'why', but that doesn't mean I won't stop pushing people to look for more sovereign alternatives.
Pushing people to look for more soverign alternatives is not helpful without guidance. You really do make less technical users feel stupid and inadequate. It's doing more harm than good.
How do you receive zaps directly to Phoenix?
You can't AFAIK
Then why did you bring it up?
None of these negative comments and posts about custodial lightning include anything about what new less-technical users should actually do.
If you put together a guide on how newbs should onboard to lightning and include it in all these comments you make, I would shout that guide from the rooftops.
Or you guys can keep bitching and making users feel stupid.
It could do with an update, but how's this for starters?
First time I've seen this or anything like it attached to one of these custodial bitching posts. How deep will people have to dig in the replies to see this?
They can just follow the link in my bio.
No need to get so triggered dude, appreciate the pushback. Maybe I'll start reposting my old guides here.
Subbed to your pod too.
🙏
Sorry of I seem triggered. I do genuinely believe this type of thing makes people feel stupid and inadequate. For most people, non-custodial lightning is not just inconvenient but not achievable at all.
I look forward to the day that changes. Lots of great stuff is under construction in the lightning world. Bolt 12, privacy features, mobile node improvements, etc. Then I will be telling people to use that stuff. Until then, custodial is best for a lot of people.
I’m not average but I’m a noob.
Don’t think it’s as simple as that but appreciate the push to keep thinking about how I can have a better setup and be more sovereign.
This 🟣 helps those conversations so much and why I’m so thankful for this 🟣 to help me with this 🟠.
It’s not. People just like to complain.
Is there not a higher probability you can maintain you anonymity if you are using a custodial wallet on nostr?
I am hesitant to link my node to my social media atm due to the pit falls of exposing your identity while using bitcoin/lightning
Anonymity from who is the question.
With a custodial option they see everyone you pay to, as well as every receive you get.
Doing it with your own node today will share your node ID with anyone trying to pay you, but outside of that it takes a much more sophisticated attacker to see sends and receive origins.
There are steps you can take to mitigate the on chain info shared when using your own node, but it's certainly not a panacea right now.
Ya I'm just saying, anyone could send me sats on nostr, and if someone wanted to they could determine my node. Hence linking my node to my social media account. With WOS it remains contained to WOS and nostr.
Was happy enough with dojo, except no lightning.
So I tried another option for non-custodial lightning.
Sadly, muh razpiblitz node keeps crashing, naughty electrs or unstable SD. Waiting for 1.9 to finally be released before trying again on a fresh card.
😔
Maybe this is why a federated model like liquid is actually better for an L2... All L2's will be inherently more centralizing. That's why they're on L2.
This is a valid concern although I would point to the fact that because Bitcoin and lightning is permission less and open, a centralized player can't take advantage of a monopoly on transactions. If it became censorious or too expensive, a competitor would come take their place rather quickly, thus leaving no incentive to do so in the first place!
It's really amazing tech. People are simple. They respond to incentive. I'm already thinking about making something similar to zaps for the Liquid Network.
You could even do stuff like badges as assets on liquid for instance. Will that be useful? idk, but why not build it and see.
Gm&Pv, self-zapereignty is the way.
