🚨🚨My 18 yr old called me overjoyed bc she “got a really good job that will work with her class schedule”

I asked her a bunch of questions and this is what I uncovered:

The owner of a roofing company is asking my daughter to climb on roofs with the promise of $10,000 commission checks to her. She is scheduled to climb on a few roofs tomorrow to provide an “inspection” in the hopes of closing a sale. CLEARLY major red flags. 🚩

She has no experience, received just one day of "sales training” (zero safety) today, and was advised she’s “not an employee” (hired as a contractor—a term she doesn't even understand) on a 100% commission basis.

There’s no safety, OSHA compliance, licensing, or proper training (harness, helmet, shoes, or other safety equipment involved or provided for her to climb on these roofs.

She has no idea the insanity of what she’s being asked to do, and he’s putting her life at risk and in violation of the law.

She’s got that wild hair of independence in her and I’m trying to get through to her as to why this is dangerous / illegal / etc.. any comments / insight you have that I can relay to her and or report this asshole are greatly appreciated.

omg 😳

No shit 🚩 😫

I’m glad you got it out of her and she told you about it and didn’t wait

I also have children of this age

This is terrible. She should have ran at the “promise of commission” BS 🙄

And it seems to be the least of her worries

She’s a baby - JUST left the nest. She has no idea - she’s innocent and motivated to succeed

The owner is taking advantage of the situation. 100%

They sell special boots for walking on roofs, but she could also fly a drone as a remote inspection.

Terrifying

1.I remember my first 1099. (Say goodbye to 30% off the top of this hypothetical wage)

2. Nice play as employing her as a "contractor" (loophole to avoid insurance, benefits, amd any liability)

3. Inspections = sales?! What chicanery is this

4. Everything about this is fucked

OSHA is what I do, I can shed a little light. Inspectors are not required to follow regular OSHA guidelines. It’s a stupid rule, but it’s their rule. My company requires our inspectors, which work for me, to wear harnesses and tie downs as if they are doing work.

A lot of roofing contractors are fly by night scam artists. They will replace whole roofs instead of repair because insurance companies don’t even send out adjusters if you can prove there was hail in the area.

is it illegal? I found photo evidence that they have zero safety equipment

I suppose that depends on the state, but I've done this work and there were no requirements for safety devices. It was good money, but I suppose like any contractual agreement, you should be cautious who you do business with.

If they are doing the actual roofing- the demo and re-shingle without safety gear that is a violation. Companies get fined all the time. If you are reporting a violation you have to do it early, OSHA is pretty back logged and might not get out before they are done. Typically roofs in Texas are done in a day to a day and a half. They are betting an OSHA inspection isn’t going to happen during the job.

This is the tea I’ve been hoping for! Thank you!!!

I wish you luck. I also have a hard headed 18 yo that “knows everything”. No wisdom to give you as I deal with the same situation.
