The act of subscribing to someone else's notes is inherently one-sided and creates a publisher and a subscriber. If both sides subscribe to each other's notes, then the connection is mutual.
Followers, follows, and mutuals are fine words ruined by mainstream influencer culture, but that's no reason not to use them.
For sure. But I also think how in this brave new world, the naming conventions are wide open.

We've got a free market for naming things that were previously centrally controlled, so it'll be interesting to see what set of words we settle on.
There are lots of words you can use to analogize the physical act of getting a client to show you specific content from relays, and a lot of ways to choose what that content is. Right now we subscribe to specific npubs and call it following, but different algorithms will pop up with different relationship types. It's a brave new world for sure.

Connection implies both ways but if you follow someone and they don’t follow you there’s no connection. But why have a separate term when you already have follow?
I guess the question is, is it useful to easily know within client UI that two peeps have made a “connection” and is it useful potentially to filter on connections?

looking for someone to follow or trying to "get" followers feels disingenuous, almost antisocial but with the nature of online media it is the starting place for social interaction. sometimes it progresses to something more and then it can be called a connection. most of the time, it stays one sided.
calling it connecting right off the bat would cheapen the actual connection I think.

I'd say stop labeling the people in the lists & start labeling the lists. Directory a boring word but I'm tired & it's the best example I can come up with at the moment 😂 everything else has connotations that may or may not be accurate

A follow could have tags associated with them that give some context as to why you followed them. That way, they can be auto-sorted into lists you can make on the fly in your client or in listr. Just like how you'd sort your contact cards with tabs. Which I'm just guessing since I've never used one 😂
