I would like a small social app. Something to facilitate family and friends. Not about connecting globally over some topic.

Profiles are public but posts are not. Maybe limit friends to 150 or something

That would be possible on a mastadon/fediverse server.

What makes you say it’s possible there and not on Nostr?

The benefit of Nostr in my opinion is the frictionless sign up. Password management is so terrifically bad that keys would be a relief for most

Nostr, by it's nature, won't hide post. It's design is to make everything except DMs public.

For right now (afaik) your nostr option would be to have a private chat group that you all share to keep posts private.

It's a very recent addition, so I don't know all the ins and outs of that setup yet.

idk, maybe that would be close enough?

I'm also not sure if any clients besides Amethys support it yet.

Private posts are completely possible on nostr.

The author of the private post would keep a list of people (call it their “circle” maybe), and they share a decryption key with everyone on this list.

There just hasn’t been an NIP describing an ideal flow yet

Sounds pretty close to NIP 24 maybe?

That's the group chat I mentioned.

NIP 87 is also being worked on for larger groups.

but most of socials could be used this way 🤔

for me is more important to have the ability to separate the groups of people i'm talking with. people do play different roles with family/friends/colleagues/etc, and not everyone should know each other.

I think we use roles irl alot and not much in socials, and this feature could be executed on nostr (even better than on tg and other messengers) via using different relays for each of the groups.

like I could post a pic hanging out with friends at friday night on every relay but work-related, see comments from both my family and friends, but keep mum's compliments on the dress and friends' local jokes separately – isn't it just right?

The UX that would be needed to make the relays work that way is quite complex. And it would be costly as well (considering free relays only exist during this hobbyist phase).

The idea of sending to multiple relays is to increase redundancy. If you only send to one relay for one purpose, you are defeating this feature of redundancy and data availability.

I think it is more likely that we will have either

1. Multiple accounts for different purposes. (Not ideal because we want to build the reputation on just one account)

2. Multiple lists of contacts to which we send “private” posts. (I think private posts are so obviously necessary and I’m surprised they haven’t seen an NIP yet)

Just some thoughts

haven't seen from this perspective, but you convinced me on the cost part 🤔

but i still wish there were services were ppl would co-op and rent private relays with some limitation (the amount of members/ limited post per day or smth like that)

i also think free relays eventually would cease to exist bc of monetisation: donations won't be enough and advertisements could be destroyed by custom content algorithms (which would sort and hide them)

multiple contact lists makes so much sense, and I had some memories of talking/reading about it. haven't you written about it before?

I’ve heard some talk about better versions of a contact list coming soon. Maybe an NIP coming.

I know nostr:npub108pv4cg5ag52nq082kd5leu9ffrn2gdg6g4xdwatn73y36uzplmq9uyev6 used to run a business where you pay him a monthly fee and he spins up and maintains your activity pub relay for you. Maybe he can reboot that business for Nostr relays if there is enough demand 🙏🏼 or nostr:npub1s6ka82ar3g9tswkqhrwyf3j50eq7uttdnzplp9k8r59su8adxfnsjafz5h can do that with the Cosa Nostr tech stack

Idk how to reference a note lol. nostr:note1t998tvrn27m5ydqhxnkn7tcaurj5u9j0lmr39yjlyjjuc3nlpaxqdqzsqe

Circles on iOS is a (centralized) version of this. I'm trying to build something like this into Coracle.
