Anybody got alternatives to uBlock Origin now that Chrome has banned it? The idea of using a web browser without an ad/scam blocker is out of the question.

Why not use Brave ?

because brave doesn’t care about privacy and instead is a browser dedicated to showing me more ads with a weird revenue model split based on some shticoin.

I always thought Brave was a good alternative

https://www.privacyguides.org/en/desktop-browsers

the brave ads are optional

Use brave

I’m not a fan of shitcoins.

I get it. But unfortunately it's still the best option in my opinion

me neither but it has some good features like tor windows. You can disable all the shitcoin bs

You can block at DNS level with pihole instead.

With the caveat that you need a router that can work with it. Might block trackers, but it never blocked ads for me, and blocking domains increases your chance of just breaking your internet browsing.

Yes, and also you need to be at home for it to work.

Brave? Perhaps you don't want to switch browser?

will it still work on Brave, actually lol? (Brave has in-built ad blocking but I have it on there too.)

does the mullvad browser have a similar ad blocker maybe? seems possible

Yeah ublock origin is installed by default, but mullvad is FF based so not exactly the same experience. BTW brave uses the ublock origin filter list so its basically the same experience + some additional filters so you're double bagging your browsing experience.

Firefox + uBlock origin

Have you tried Librewolf

If Brave isn't an option, librewolf would be my next choice.

been scammed much 😹

The alternative is... uBlock origin, but on manifest v2

EFF's PrivacyBagder + NoScript

still on chromewebstore

privacybadger.org

I used to be a Chrome maxi. I switched to Firefox + uBlock Origin last year and haven’t looked back.

“uBlock Origin Lite (manifest v3)” seems to be the new way to go but I’m not into the details yet

Installing that is just accepting defeat at the hands of google

I use Zen + uBlock

First pick a browser engine.

Browser Engines

Webkit: safari, gnome web, konqueror, orion

Blink: chrome, chromium, edge, brave, vivaldi, hauwei browser, samsung browser, opera, duckduckgo browser, maxthon, yandex

gecko: firefox, thunderbird, tor browser, waterfox, zen browser, midori

goanna: pale moon, basilisk, K-meleon

maintained but not active engines: trident, edgehtml, presto, flo, servo, netsurf, libweb

discontinued angines: khtml

maybe running Ungoogled Chromium gets around that

Don’t use chrome! Use Brave or Safari with wipr.

Firefox

Pest. Or Cholera.

Use brave

You can always pair a DNS filter with uBlock Origin Lite, so that any shortcomings from the extension get properly addressed by the filtering of the private DNS server you've set up.

I use ghostery on Brave to get to my unstoppable sites on IPFS

You just don't use Chrome. The alternatives are several, mainly Brave and Firefox.

For now I just ignored chrome:s warning and re enabled it manually

Get rid of Chrome - spyware.

You are correct that a browser without an ad blocker is out of the question. Therefore, the browser vendor should be responsible for filtering out this traffic. I am picking browsers with built-in ad and tracker blocking. I switch between Vivaldi (I trust the company 👍👍), Orion (I use their search engine 👍), and DuckDuckGo Browser.

Anyhow, my advice is that browser should have the ad blocker deeply embedded into it.

Mullvad Browser

Then Chrome is out of the question. Everything Google makes is to duel ad revenues. Brave still supports it I believe

Ublock Lite works, albeit not as well.

Within Chromium - but outside Chrome - Brave, Vivaldi and Opera all have built in blockers (Brave's is even compatible with Unlock Origin blocklists) that are built into the browser so they don't need manifest V2 support to do Manifest V2 level blocking.

A few Chromium browsers like Brave and possibly Vivaldi also support Manifest V2 for now.

A Pi Hole or ad blocking DNS could also be a way to block a lot without extensions, although it'd be limited for anything on the same domain like Youtube ads.

Gecko also may be a good alternative if it works for you. It's falling behind in development, leading me to experience memory leaks and compatibility issues sometimes, but it may or may not meet your needs. Forks like LibreWolf cut out the Mozilla junk and support Manifest v2.

not using chrome, or you can use a system wide IP blocker like PortMaster, it's not as convenient as having it in the browser itself, but it allows you to block any content you don't want

You can still use uBlock Origin

just use the switch on the right site....

Adguard Desktop is best for no frills serup., especially if you pay the ltd license.

Just use Brave. I am surprised how many people still use google chrome. Google is a privacy nightmare.

You could try nextdns.io for your dns, it has a pretty effective blocklist setup.
