I have an Antminer S9i running BraiinsOS+ that I want to use to heat my apartment with but I obv don’t want too much noise. Does anyone have any tips to configuring/underclocking the miner to run more silently? I don’t care if it’s running at a net loss. Just want to heat my home and maybe earn some sats while doing so.

I’m a complete noob when it comes to this shit so bear with me

There’s a video at the bottom that may help

Thanks!

Can’t you buy one of those sound proof boxes and port it with a small fan, and some flexible duct? Seen the boxes for sale to silence the miners.

Yeah, I plan to build one myself but won’t be able to right now

You just need to use BraiinsOS to underclock it. I run mine at 800 watts. It's not to loud and puts out plenty of heat. If you want it quieter you can tune it lower or even try swapping the fans for quieter ones.

But where to you set the power limit? Is it under the “Autotuning” settings? Or is it under the “Global Hash Chain Settings” and “AsicBoost” settings?

Following this.  I am hoping to get my hands on an S9 soon.

Feel free to ask any questions 🤝

Configuration, Performance, Auto Tuning, PSU Power Limits. Put in 800.

Do you have AsicBoost enabled?

You don't have to configure anything with BraiinsOS. If your pool supports it, you're good. I use SlushPool (Now called Braiins Pool).

Check out #[2] - and data they have coming out on January 1st!

This thread came to mind. I have no experience, but hopefully someone here can get you on the right track.

I believe you are already to use the BraiinsOs+ interface/dashboard (whatever it is called) and adjust the settings on your miner. That should reduce wattage, hash rate etc and affect the sound I think. However have not used it directly. Can anyone else chime in with more experience?

Yeah, I should probably have been more specific. I meant to ask for help on configuration in the Braiins OS+ interface. Thanks though.

Gotcha! Hope you get it figured out. I would like to do the same type of setup one day.

Not too hard to do. Derek has the basics but if you want ‘quiet’ you should replace the asic fans and the PSU fan. (Noctua - I can get you exact parts)

Me - I replaced the PSU fan and took out the ASICS fans and use a 6” ac infinity fan. Whisper quiet - running at 900w

Sir, that’s a bazooka😂

That’s a really cool setup. What is that stand? Did you 3d print it yourself?

Yes, 3d printer the parts. Very easy to do, I just followed the work in this YouTube vid. It’s one way to go… more minimal is to NOT use the big ac infinity fan (I had one already so I used it). Replacing the main fans with 140mm noctuas is also a great choice!

(CryptoCloaks) for a great s9 heater build, he’s doing some fantastic work on all of this…

Cool! You don't need a fan to blow cold air into the miner?

The 6” ac infinity on top does all the work - it pulls air thru the miner instead. Works well!

😂

As a noob, how straight forward was it for you to get the miner hooked up to a pool and earning sats?

Braiins OS+ was already installed on it when I bought it so I just had to sign up for an account on Braiins, find the IP of the miner, log in and configure the pool to talk to Braiins’ pool. I did it just after summer so I don’t remember every detail about it but it wasn’t hard.

Yeh copy what cryptocloaks does 😂 (or buy one off them)

Yo, we just got paged? What can we help with! 🤘😎

What fans do you recommend for an Antminer S9i? Want to replace both “miner fans” and PSU fan. I got a lot of good recommendations from others but want to see what your take is as well 🤙

My favorite setup:

- Upgraded Silent Noctua – 60mm PSU Fan : https://amzn.to/3jElftz

- Upgraded Main Fans – 140mm Noctua 3000 RPM :https://amzn.to/3Wzcfob

- 140mm to 120mm fan Adapters : https://www.cryptocloaks.com/product/120mm-fan-to-140mm-fan-adapter-for-asics/

Keep an eye out 👀

Have you considered building a little insulated box out of plywood to house the miner? Mitigate sound and then direct the heat with fans.

Yeah I'm going to do that but won't be able to right now

Yo. I had this same problem and found a great solution after some time and research and totally use my S9 to heat my apartment. (Mainly as a small space heater).

What you have to do if you are going for quiet is replace the fans first. The Phanteks T-30’s (about $30 each on amazon) are great replacement fans but they max out at 3000rpm, but they are almost dead silent. When it’s all said and done the loudest thing is the power supply fan…. The downside (if you want to call it that, i personally think its a positive) is that you need to use BrainsOS+ and keep the S9 running at 1200 watts or less because the Phanteks will only spin up to 3000 rpm unlike the stock fans that spin at like 6000 and are loud af.

Ends up being a great, quiet miner that you can tolerate for hours at a time sitting in the same room with. I can sit by mine a few feet away and forget its even on.

Feel free to DM me if you want more info to pursue this path. A few more small details to mention but generally thats all you need and it works great.

Thanks for the thorough answer! I'll check out the Phanteks vs the other fans people have recommended in this thread.

Yeah no worries. I was in the exact same boat before so I know its easy to feel overwhelmed with what to do. Good luck!

NOTE: S9 Antminer 👆

A lot of good help in this thread for anyone new to mining at home. Got it up and running, my space heater is now hashing away!  #[0]

I started doing this about 10 days ago. My electricity bill went up a few dollars each day but that’s ok because I earned $3 in sats and now have a nice foot warmer.

I’m convinced there is no /good/ S9 firmware for heating use. Braiins has been taking down their open source code too.

Where did you get the ASIC from?

Bought it from a guy at the local bitcoin meetup

Lovely stuff

I think swapping the fans for quieter ones is the way to go.
