how do we get people to care about privacy? it all starts there.
Discussion
Unfortunately, most people are willing to sacrifice their privacy for the promise of "security."
Gen z cares about security a lot. I think re privacy, a lot of young people just understand that in order to do what they want on the internet, they have to give up privacy. They’ve never lived in a private world I guess. So much harder
that’s an excellent point.
Start putting down Mark Zuckerberg publicly. He's responsible for destroying people's faith in privacy. "if you have nothing to hide you shouldn't worry" was everywhere once Facebook went public.
The majority don’t
Bitcoiners give endless excuses for using Wallet of Satoshi so I think we need to start at home first
Just let the government keep stealing theirs. They will figure it out eventually.
Talk more about stalkers tracking people via Facebook posts, hacked email servers, hacked government and corporate systems, grocery stores, hospitals. Unless people see the implications, they'll keep embracing convenience over privacy without a care in the world.
Every time you goto someone's house with an Alexa, or are on a podcast, news segment, etc, say some magical phrases "Alexa, what's in my shopping cart"
"Alexa, what's on my calendar"
"Alexa, sign up for Amazon Music"
impossible ... it's the age of convinience
I've always struggled to get people to care about it.
I like to lay it on thick:
sometimes there is good article or video about that so I am sending that to my friends so they can educate themself
lastly I did find very good video and posted a note about that:

I was talking with a 22 y/o a few weeks back and he literally didn’t care. It’s dystopian.
Giving different groups of people some relatable examples of the dangers and risks of giving up privacy, will get the message across.
People don’t seem to care when they don’t see how it can affect them specifically.
I think it starts with how we get people to THINK outside of the box (narrative).
make them aware about it.
people are so oblivious these days, they don’t even know that the way they are doing things on a daily basis isn’t secure
Having family that survived the holocaust and/or Stalinist purges certainly helps. But society quickly forgets the dangers and think that it clearly can’t happen here and now…
People were quick to give up their whole genome to 23 and me for what? Some mildly amusing family history. It was impressive and scary how that resulted in some truly awful people who committed crimes in like the 70s finally getting caught, but also like super scary for people like Jews who’ve kind of had a history of genocides.
In the U.K. not caring about privacy is being conditioned into people with cctv everywhere and most places going cashless
Good and very hard question… unfortunately I still know a lot of people that reply with the classic “I do not have anything to hide!”, and make you look like a crazy fanatical geeky!
I said that for years the only way is to teach early on the school before the people as the first contact with the internet and social networks if not then its too late for almost people because its hard to explain why schould`t use tiktok facebook's and so one, everyone has why i can't? And is so coool....
This is the problem....
Ask them why we use envelopes? Also ask them if they happy to have their children videotaped while bathing
The only people I know who take privacy seriously are those that have negatively experienced loss of privacy. The same goes for security. The folks with the best locks on their houses have been robbed. My friends that own guns have been in situations where they were attacked and wished they could have better defended themselves.
Wise men learn from experience, but the wisest men learn from the experience of others. The rest will always be lazy and choose convenience over freedom.
Yep. 100% concur. A Bitcoin group local to me is using Telegram but I was part of their leak last year where accounts ended up on the dark web and won't use it ever again. Several I've talked to about this don't understand and don't think it is a big deal. Incongruent values for a Bitcoiner IMO. That isn't even getting into the fact they've recently added BTC payments and have KYC on their app... nah man, I'm good.
Gradually, and then suddenly. More and more known people will be unbanked
I guess once they get hurt by lack of privacy, but by then it might be too late?
I rly don't think it's possible
Pandemic assistance fraud due to privacy being broken in this country cost taxpayers a trillion dollars (via identity theft).
Beyond that, I think examples around the world that clearly show how no privacy = no freedom are powerful.
Pain is typically the greatest teacher so, rekt?
Would be great if influencers like yourself would educate the public on it’s importance. Those of us who care about privacy just assume it’s importance is self evident but apparently it’s not.
Anyone who argues against privacy while wearing clothing has already lost the arguement in my book.
Force them to read a few blog posts from rms
We meet them where they are at in their journey.
There is no forcing it 🤙
Unless ppl are not directly affected, they don't bother much about privacy. Maybe showing examples what can go wrong on web2 platforms could help a bit.
You cannot force it on people. They have nothing to hide, not so?
All it took for me was to realize what other people can do with my data. I used to think "well I've got nothing to hide" and just rolled with it. Now I use physical security keys and never give out my real e-mail to anyone I dont know. All I need to do still is to eliminate the threat to my phone number, but I'm working on it.
