Relays are something that the average user should never need to think about.

They should only need to care about getting a note or a request into "the network". Once their note or request has hit "the network" the user's job is done.

The fact is that technically competent people generally don't care about relay selection, and never will.

Believing we can change that is the same catagory of magical thinking that caused people to say things like "everyone will open a channel and never close it".

Small relay fetish is just weird

Every relay should relay to every other relay somehow. Like radio waves.

I don't understand how topic specific relays can exist.

I’ve wanted topic specific relays since I joined nostr over a year ago, but I’m slowly coming around to appreciate that the architecture naturally wants to spread notes far and wide.

No, we will have topic relays, we just have too few users.

One of the most attractive ideas when I first heard of the nostr was of noting to topical or group based relays and switching relays for different content themes

the most popular clients do not have a ux that lends itself to selectively relay publishing. maybe the way we use nostr will change but I’ve yet to see it.

Amethyst does. Right at the top when noting.

so does coracle.

but neither primal nor damus do.

People shouldn't need to care about anything. Yet, here we are, trying to escape capture of those systems you describe. 🧨🦜

The same for lightning nodes. I can't imagine my mother taking care of a live lightning node, dealing with opening and closing channel, rebalancing, etc. It will never happen.
