By the end of the year I will only have 3 computing devices.

1. Google Pixel Fold 10 (#GrapheneOS)

2. System76 Lemur Pro (#Fedora)

3. Amazon Kindle Paperwhite

I have dozens and dozens of kit from nearly two decades of geekery.

Time to be free. No more desktops. No more tablets. No more servers. No more racks. No more switches. No more crates of old chargers and cables. No more bullshit.

I was a longtime Debian/XFCE user, but after buying a more powerful PC I'm really warming up to KDE on fedora! KDE connect is a huge timesaver 😎👌

Lately I prefer Gnome on Silverblue.

I haven't tried gnome since the v2 days...

Honestly very impressed lately.

Maybe I'll test it on my pixel soon 🚀

So rebase it onto Secureblue

Looks pretty active... Will have to give it a gander.

I follow you with my Thinkpad

Replace your 3. with https://github.com/Acclorite/book-story and torrent all ebooks. No more $ to Amazon. If authors don't sell the file through their own site, then i don't care about paying them.

I'd like to, but that's too much work at the moment. For the same reason I prefer Spotify to downloading music en masse.

The foss ebook reader app i mentioned doesn't require doesn't take any effort. As for the ebooks torrents, it depends on how well known the author is, but shouldn't be hard to find them. I have a Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the inner screen is great to read ebooks.

Can't wait for the Pixel 10 Fold Pro.

Hoping in 2030s they perfect hybrid eink displays.

This is a nice Android front end to libgen. You can download and read in your preferred reader app.

I switch the System76 Lemur Pro with a laptop from TUXEDO. It's like a European System7 brand.

I like this model: Stellaris 16 - Gen6.

Or this one: InfinityBook Pro 14 - Gen9 - AMD

Which 🇪🇺 model do you prefer?

Haven't looked at that market.

No bitcoin node?

I plan to run one on an Android device now that debian support is shipping.

How do you like the fold

10 hasn't come out yet. 9 looks good, but I havent used it. I mostly use my device like a mini computer. Seems like a good fit.

Cool, I'm thinking about making that my main, was waiting for some trusted reviews and a couple product cycles

Looks like one wouldnt need a tablet at all. Just a mobile device and a laptop.

In the 2030s, you'll probably be able to do away with the laptop and just go mobile device + ereader.

I could see that. There are some brands doing a combo e paper and OLED screen. Could see maybe just moving to mobile only that can switch to ereader

Being able to toggle to eInk would be incredible. Didn't know that technology existed.

Can you link me to a Youtube video about said screen/device?

https://youtube.com/shorts/240fCtSQq1o

There's a few but here's a quick sample of the previous gen. TCL release a tablet and phone last week that took it up another level

I think you might be right.

This type of screen on a future Pixel fold would eliminate the need for an eReader....

If I could be down to 1 device in the 2030s...

Do you have any experience with GrapheneOS on Pixel?

Used it every day for years now.

Have you tried SecureBlue?

Never heard of it.

Hardened Fedora distro. Uses hardened_malloc and vanadium variant from GOS

https://github.com/secureblue/secureblue

Going to trial it.

Do you know the Pocketbook ebooks brand? You'll probably like their software better than the intrusive Amazon

Oof, no USBc.

No warm light.

You're right, the Era has light temp and USBc. More inline with what I'd expect.

I really love the idea of a non-Amazon device. I wish PocketBook supported the American market.

Look at the Era model, i think it has Usb-c 100%.

How about a Daylight Computer to replace number 3, but with far more capability? Yes, it’s a tablet.... but it’s nostr-friendly and blue-light-free.

https://daylightcomputer.com/

I’m not affiliated with the project, but I’m seriously considering getting one to replace my Kindle.

Not a fan.

They seem to track everything you do and where you do it in order to sell it to the whole world. So bad, could have been such a great product but like this it's a hard pass for me.

Ah crap! A real missed opportunity to stand out with far superior privacy. Unfortunately, running Tails OS isn’t an option either, as the MediaTek Helio G99 CPU isn’t supported.

Yes, absolutely. I was so keen on getting one because the concept is great, but not like this. Hopefully, someday we'll get something similar based on GrapheneOS or a similar OS.

Indeed, 100%! They’d be better positioned as a ‘sovereign health hardware company’, and build for running GrapheneOS. There’s huge demand for such a device.

If not a huge demand, then a huge need.

🎯💯

i hate portable devices, and have fun when they break lol but if you are traveling or slimming down your stuff, ok but i wouldn't trade my desktop for anything other than upgrading it to a better one, and if i could, i wouldn't even have a mobile phone, literally only the banking establishment is forcing me as they stopped doing web interfaces a few years ago

Had to think of this scene, lol.

If you ever replace that Kindle (because of DRM, Amazon enshittification, etc), I can recommend the nostr:npub1a00wj229auzjswlq4s77y4u8eqdx5k9ppatgl8rtv8va65f6mwksum9q3h DC-1. I haven’t read this many PDFs, books and articles in years. No bluelight, doesn’t fuck up your circadian rhythm, hackable.

Hoping #Pixel Fold steals these features over the years so I can keep using GrapheneOS.

Technically a great product that I wanted to buy... but doesn't it bother you that nostr:npub1a00wj229auzjswlq4s77y4u8eqdx5k9ppatgl8rtv8va65f6mwksum9q3h literally tracks everything you do/see swipe etc. on "your" device in order to sell it most likely to governments and everbody else who pays for your personal data? For me at least that's the reason I'm not getting one until they overthink their business model (sell hardware instead of all my personal data) or someone else with higher morals builds a similar product ✌️

I’m running mine in airplane mode about 99% of the time, unless I need to use their Reader app (which syncs to their backend) whenever I send new content there.

Following their latest announcement on their software stack I’m actually considering to see if I can get parts of GrapheneOS or at least a GSI to boot on this thing.

Running an old Android version with a backlog of 6+ months of outstanding software updates already feels terrible enough after having spend close to 800EUR on this thing but having to wait another 4-6 months until they ship whatever version of their OS is making me kinda angry.

For me this device should have been a laptop/tablet replacement so I can start spending most of my screentime outside. Aka need to be mostly online. This screen with Graphene would be a immediate buy for me.

Awesome, what’s the software stack that goes with that? Coming from iOS so have lots to learn

So you're not gun a run a node?

To be fair then, it just means you're going to use someone else's servers.

I want to share this on various #selfhosted boards to cause riots.

I'm sure XD

how are you going to run a node?
