Nostr projects have a nice opportunity to bootstrap via grants, while retaining full control and ownership.

But continuing to fund via grants over the long term does seem to be detremental for most projects. It kills any sense of urgency. The incentives are not there to build a useful product for users.

doesn't seem like your VCs make it any better, or are your devs just missing some screws or something

There's no one stopping other investors from betting on what they think is a better horse.

That is beside the point that grants lead to economic lethargy, when they're too generous or long-term. Humans need a sense of urgency, to stay focused and recognize opportunity.

with most nostr grants i think the problem is they aren't targeted at a purpose just "do whatever" even though they say that at the beginning, not one grantee seems to stay on one task and get it done properly

Because they don't want to micromanage them. Grant-givers aren't bosses and NGOs aren't businesses; they're charities.

Businesses need to be run for-profit, so that the market is the boss.

the other bizarre thing about the grants is that they all pretty much seem to be for clients, and nothing is about getting a concept for a business off the ground

cloudfodder is one exception i know of

I think nostr.build also had a grant and managed to actually launch from there.

And Damus. Say what you will, but Will actually seems to want to make legit money.

damus has a revenue model?

Sorry, wrong emoji. 😂

Yes

What the hell is a "plan"?

Having a plan is hell.

Only if it is made by the wrong person.

Is the wrong person for making a plan not always the same person? Where this same person is always "someone with incompatible values compared to mine".

We have a plan.

Are you from hell?

No, we have a heavenly plan to bring knowledge to the huddled masses. 😁

Not seeing meaningful impact

this is why i weaned my smol business off the grant train 8 months ago. still here. still focused on being sustainable.

burn rate low, i will outlast both grants and VCs flooding the market with free subsidized services because I only have an obligation to my customers.

Not all heros wear capes.

Yes. Grants as your ante and the rest from winning hands.
