I think tiktokers enjoy the community and connection the app brings and are hoping another established app can give them that. They also believe that Mark Zuckerberg pushed for the ban and they don’t want him to financially benefit once the app goes dark.

Yes the fallout of all this is going to be historic. We should all be paying attention. It is a huge deal the United States is banning a social media app.

I think we see the development priorities that reflect our community here on #Nostr. The foundation of this community are folks from #Bitcoin Twitter who got tired of dealing with not owning their identity, social graph, or content, and dealing with shadow-banning and being slaves to the algorithm there.
As a result of this, we see that most clients are some permutation of a Twitter-clone. We really have very little selection when it comes to clients outside of that format of content. Long-form would be the closest 2nd, probably, with Habla, Highlighter, YakiHonne, Blogstack and now Primal supporting that content type, and only a few of them focusing entirely on it.
Video content we have what? Flare.pub? Anything else out there that supports kinds 34235 or 34236, let alone focuses specifically on 34236 the way TicTok does? I can't think of anything, which seems to indicate that it's not something our community has really been pushing for.
As Nostr grows so will the community that builds it. I joined Nostr a year ago and months later nostr:npub1pmhevxtlt3478pvmdqt7dftnv6zc2mzpdc569yjm6ks4k2jhezcs53uksr and I start working on #nextblock. Because I pushed for it.
We think we're building a great social media experience that anyone would enjoy and the benefits of Nostr will be the bonus feature.
The painpoints of Twitter you listed are the same on any legacy social media. And Bitcoiners have been divided from the rest of society because of legacy social media blocking information. We should be working to bring different experiences for the masses. To free us all.
Oh, I completely agree! We should be building ALL THE THINGS on Nostr, and I am stoked to try out NextBl9ck when it is ready. I was just giving my take on why the Nostr community doesn't seem to care much about what is happening with TicTok.
Oh gotcha! Yes completely understand. Everyone deserves to build the app that they would want to use. Also I have so much admiration for everyone who worked on nostr the first four years. So inspiring to start such a revolution.

It’s a fair point, from an indie web fan perspective, anything forcing people away from digital bedlam is good but if they then just leave for Facebacon, that’s a fail.

And they do not want to move back to meta apps. There is a movement now to deactivate meta accounts this week to punish metas lobbying efforts that successfully got TikTok banned.

Nope. It's an intentional organized movement on the TikTok app that only started 24 hours ago.
The ban is happening in 6 days and people are very angry at Congress and American owned social media companies. They don't want to go back to meta and no one uses X.
The CEO of RedNote has already publicly welcomed American TikTokers and said they are working on translating the app into English.

The reason they picked RedNote is specifically because it is a Chinese owned app. All to be petty and show they will go anywhere but where the American government can control.

Yeah TikTokers are cool! And they understand the power they have in numbers. They lead movements on a regular basis and win.

I have seen so many panicked videos asking WHERE DO WE GO and there isn't a single mention of Nostr. The most random BS apps are getting attention.
I unfortunately have zero presence on Tiktok and my comments get no traction .
It's such a shame. We're just too isolated here in Nostr. These TikTokers are desperate to all move to the same app so they can stay in touch. And I'm sitting here like you could own your identity and social graph forever on Nostr 😩

I think it’s mostly a big game of “chicken” - however, I have the same beef (excuse all the meat metaphors) with TikTok that I have with other non-nostr media which is: it’s all controlled by invisible hands. Congress and the media are banking on anyone not on TikTok to not care that they are banning it. And they've gotten away with it.
It's really shocking that they're about to shutdown an app that 170 million Americans use.
And if your don't use TikTok you really have no idea how different it is from other social media. This is why they can mobilize overnight and pull off something like this.

Today made me think that we may be compounding that effect being on #nostr. I haven't seen anyone else talking about this #tiktokban and how it is proving the power we all hold. They organized on #tiktok and made an app famous overnight.
Telling people to "get on Nostr" isn't working.
We need to definitively say "get on {app}". We know it doesn't matter which one it is, but for people who are just looking for a new social media app they don't value that value prop. They do value "nobody can take this one away from you" value prop. we should lead with this.
