What do Nostr clients need the most to help with growth?
Discussion
Feedback?
A mechanism for in-app feedback?
Yes. I mean, most of us using nostr a bit tech-savvy, to say the least. However, if we want to accomplish greater adoption, we should “open to the masses”. And to accomplish that, apps should have a way to gather feedback. Not everyone has a GitHub account and will create an issue or create PR with changes. 😉
Right now mostly content / post from people I think. As much as I'd like to fully transition there is obviously still a lot more to read on Twitter. Not necessarily as targeted though
Hmm. That depends on who your following I guess. Since Nostr doesn't have algorithms to bring content forward and make it more easily discoverable, we have to be our own algorithms. The best way to get started here is to follow 1000 people to ensure you never go without content. Maybe we need clients to recommend more people to follow?
Good idea for suggestion of people and/or topic to follow. Also isn't there some work for being able to pick an algorithm style? Ex: more up to date, more engaging, more videos, etc.
This has been discussed lot, an algorithm store, where you can choose your own feed.
I have found that even my most fringe hashtag follows, there is already at least one or two post.
So... That's good news.
I like the fact that my streams are not neverending yet. This will change for sure 😄
Maybe a catalogue popular hashtags on NOSTR like: Most zapped, most boosted. With some search options etc.
Probably something like this already exists.
But having it in a client like amathyst would be nice! nostr:npub1gcxzte5zlkncx26j68ez60fzkvtkm9e0vrwdcvsjakxf9mu9qewqlfnj5z 🙌🐐⚡⚡😎
(Who knows soon we'll all have a little AI buddy like radical Ed. To help us surf the #nostrverse )

Time. 😅 There's a lot to experiment with and a lot to build.
Agreed
Time for whom? Users or developers?
Time for sure. Just imagine one person alone doing a iOS Twitter like client compared to Twitter itself that has hundreds of devs and probably took years to build.
They need to work well and look nice, most of the ones I’ve tried don’t. The biggest complaint I’ve had in general is battery usage.
I think battery life is a struggle for everything. Battery technology has not caught up to screen technology, power hungry SoC speeds, and user's needs to constantly be on their devices.
It’s not that. I haven’t (re)tried any clients recently, but last time I used Iris for example, it almost set my phone on fire.
Damus seems to have gotten better about that, but I also removed some relays like some ppl suggested.
Oh, I have another idea. One of the biggest complaints I see is that nostr is like 99% bitcoin stuff, and it is.
Adding the ability to follow hashtags on your feed seems like a good way to solve that.

i ended up just using this desktop client called "more speech" its kinda weird looking, but it's nice to not have to rely on the web browser.

memes
we don't have enough and nostr:npub180cvv07tjdrrgpa0j7j7tmnyl2yr6yr7l8j4s3evf6u64th6gkwsyjh6w6 is sad because of it
We must continue to send him daily nature pics, memes, and GMs so he doesn't turn Nostr off.
An invite mechanism, that the NPC clicks and gets things setup.
Relay specialization, navigation and community control over relays. Global feeds, universal broadcasting is a nice concept - but I think we need to incorporate exclusive community relays in addition to community hashtags or subreddit-like organization. Community control also rpasses some of the moderation responsibility aspects from relay operators to the community that uses the relay
I agree they we need better relay controls and discovery. We need more emphasis on relays in general. But not too much though. We don't want to overcomplicate technical issues for non technical people.
Differential use cases that levarage network effects. A plan for how to earn money and expand user base. Currently most clients focus on twitter like experience. We need more weird and cool apps like highlighter, stuff possible only on nostr.
A feature to discover quality content for new users
Some clients have this. Primal and Snort come to mind. What client are you using?
I mainly use Damus, which has a half baked one as well.
I literally onboarded someone to Nostr and their first question was 'how do I find good content here'
This is something that most of the devs are missing out when developing their clients, the initial setup that would set the users for their return for more.
that’s the man reason why i switched to primal… but recently i’ve found it not as effective as before… eg. most suggested content is 12 to 20 hours old
Optimization is really necessary, especially for older devices.
Performance issues in some clients and excess data usage can make it a poor quality experience and expensive to run on a metered connection.
One feature I'm looking for is a micro node to run in the background of each client device to speed it up and reduce duplicate downloads. I know nostr:npub1gcxzte5zlkncx26j68ez60fzkvtkm9e0vrwdcvsjakxf9mu9qewqlfnj5z is looking into / working on this for Amethyst.
Onboarding and UX. It's as easy as that.
absolutely. these are the two afterthoughts that devs will eventually come back to after the technical aspects are built.
Group chat
we have public group chats check out nostrchat.io
if you're talking about private group checks, that's coming too. nostr:npub1gcxzte5zlkncx26j68ez60fzkvtkm9e0vrwdcvsjakxf9mu9qewqlfnj5z and nostr:npub1jlrs53pkdfjnts29kveljul2sm0actt6n8dxrrzqcersttvcuv3qdjynqn are working on it.
More opinionated clients
1. Awareness that nostr isn't just a Twitter/Mastodon replacement
1a. The benefit of a single identifier being used for all of the various services.
2. Consistency of features- people will wonder why can they "delete" an event or search for a key word one client but not another.
Speed
Better search
Integration with the rest of the nostr
Be easy to work with
More guids and manuals
