Do different paid relays (i.e. nostr land and nostr wine) really effect reach?

I have so many questions. What does the broadcast button do? What does forking a note do? Along with many others.

Nostr is amazing and growing so fast that I don't have the time to keep up. I'm okay with that and embrace it.

I will be happy if the relay question gets answered. #asknostr

Same lol need some vids on it.

Or neurolink

That’ll work

I don't get any of it. I'm glad there are so many smart people building this out.

Me too

I think forking a note is about dividing up the zaps? 🤔

Sure....

Broadcast you submit that post to all your relays, you have this ability to post as that user because the post itself was already validated by them. Can help someones reach if they only post on smaller relays.

However because you are replicating the exact posts relays will think its that person, so even if you have access to a relay the relay may reject the post if the posts author isnt compliant with that relay.

Gets confusing. Thanks

Nostr .wine is pay-once-to-write so it basically filters out spam from the get-go for "global" content viewing or single relay browsing. You're basically paying once to be part of a cleaner feed. Nostr .land is similar in that respect but also does more, so its a subscription. One main thing it does is help protect your replies from spam, if you set it as a public inbox. It also works for your DMs.

As far as those affecting reach, it really depends on what client your followers are using. Some find your notes, regardless of what public outbox you are sending your notes to. Others look on a static set of relays. If you have a lot of iOS users who follow you, putting these bigger paid relays as a public outbox is a good idea.

Broadcast sends a copy of a note to any relays that will connect with you & accept it. Fork is like a fancy copy/paste for adding thoughts/ideas/context to other people's notes while still crediting the original author. Different than a quote note in that it's more for collaboration. I think only Amethyst has that feature & displays it correctly though lol

Thank you. It is very involved.

Only as much as you want it to be. Defaults or minimal adjustments should work fine for most people as a classic 1 feed social media replacement. Nostr has just moved so far beyond that single purpose.

Absolutely. Tis the way going forward. Thanks.

1. No, paid relays do not affect reach. Reach is only as good as the other party is good as looking for your notes. Reach is subjective

2. When you “post” you are broadcasting or “sending” your notes to a relay for safe keeping and easy retrieval by you and others. I’ve never heard of forking a note.

Nostr is a plane being built while it’s in the air! It’s quite magical and borderline psychotic but I love seeing all the development.

Would love to answer any other questions you have.

You’re the best

And I still suck as using the right account to reply lol

Thanks. Forking is an option in nostr:nprofile1qqs24yz8xftq8kkdf7q5yzf4v7tn2ek78v0zp2y427mj3sa7f34ggjcpzamhxue69uhhv6t5daezumn0wd68yvfwvdhk6tcpzpmhxue69uhkummnw3ezumt0d5hszrnhwden5te0dehhxtnvdakz769wywf.

hmm im not so sure.

the "broadcast" button (separate from the post button) re-transmits your note to additional relays it has not reached yet. So that does indeed affect reach.

This is relevant to both 1 and 2.

I guess it depends on how the “broadcast” button works within your client.

If you only set up two or three relays, it will only broadcast to those two or three relays, no matter how many times you click broadcast.

Also, just because you broadcast to multiple relays, doesn’t mean that more people see it. It just means it’s in more places. There’s no guarantee that more people look in those places for your Content specifically.

Fair enough.

I was assuming that the more places the note is broadcast too, the higher the chances of more clientsin general to see it.

Nostr isn’t like a client-server system where each note only “lives” on the relays you posted to. It’s closer to a gossip network, where relays exchange events with each other, and clients sync from multiple relays.

Where do the events live?

Or do they rely on 100% up time by the network to survive?

Dont relays store a database of events?

What I’m saying is, they don’t ONLY live on the relay that you post them to. They get distributed around the network.

Anyone can decide to keep a copy and keep it online, yes, it would require 100% uptime for each relay to hold everything.

You can run your own relay pretty simply and store a copy of your own notes in case your connected relays ever go offline

Yes that's what I do
