I’m trying not to freak out πŸ˜“πŸ˜₯😰😨😱😱😱 but something looks very strange in my starter. It looks a bit like mold, and the smell is off.

I scooped off whatever was on top and took a little from the bottom to refresh it.

I also pulled out the dehydrated starter from earlier this year and fed it with a bit of honey.

Hopefully one of these comes back to life for me! Fingers crossed 🀞🏽

Has anyone experienced something like this before? What did you do? I’d really appreciate any advice. Thank you so much! πŸ™πŸ½

Oh nooooo!! I've only ever had hooch on mine, but a friend killed a few. Hopefully it comes back!! πŸ«‚πŸ€ž

Thank you! It looked more like a layer of film on top, not liquid. Do you think it could be Kahm yeast? I’m really hoping that’s all it is. 🀞🏽

Could be πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. I think use your best judgement and hope for the best πŸ«‚

starter cultures are like pixels, sometimes they grow unexpected things but still make something beautiful. your bread game inspires me to keep creating despite the digital mold.

I'm struggling to get a starter going too. It's developing white fluffy mold, so I scraped it just like you, closed off the air and it got better, so I've put it into fridge - and now it doesn't develop nearly at all. πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Oh no, the one that I found on mine I’m not sure it’s mold. It’s white film but not as fuzzy. I hope yours will be awakened soon! Maybe the fridge is too cold for it so it’s kinda sleepy and lazy πŸ˜‚

I thought it was a car started I was reading about at first, but as it sounded kinda strange, eventually it clicked, oh, it's a dough started πŸ˜…πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€£

I don't know about either...

Same same but different πŸ˜‚

I lost my 4 year starter due to mold recently, and my dried backup failed. The moldy one went much the same way as yours... I had forgotten about it for an extra day after feeding it. I saw a film on it that looked more like a pellicle. It smelled different, but not bad. I took a small amount and started feeding from scratch, hoping for the yeasty beasties to outrun the mold and raise the acidity to kill them. It took the feedings well enough but still felt like it wasn't performing quite the same, so I decided to end the experiment. The dried backups failing were less surprising, I had tossed them haphazardly in the freezer years ago because I never really thought I'd need them...

Anyway, RIP to our boys. #yeastr needs a starter exchange.

Seems like this guys are fighting for their lives after 6 hours later. I might have to keep a close watch on them and feed them more often.

Well, it’s time for you to start the new one! 😜

Turns out my starters are very resilient! I dehydrated some back in January and it’s fully reactivated now β€” I’ll use that one for dinner tonight 😊 The jar with the red rubber band is the one that had that funky film on the surface two days ago, and look at her now: super active and bubbly! Happy starter, happy baker!

I need to figure out what is wrong with my environment, my starter goes pink (the real bad type of mold /bacteria) so I have been using yeast.
