Need new sneakers for gym and/or out and about town. Nikes most likely, but stores here have jack and all the ones I like online can't be bought retail.
Can someone with good taste recommend pair? If I get them I'll zap ya

Nike is a very, very gross company... I, personally, refuse to buy anything that they sell.
What kind of working out?
Sigh, I'm sorry beave, but I've tried various brands in past and regretted, especially with sports (bball or tennis), so am convinced they're just good despite issues with company.
Just regular weight lifting. Been wearing old pair and they just kinda stink and look whack at this point. I plan to wear them for running errands sometimes too.
I'm firmly in the camp that lifting should be done barefoot or with non-cushiony shoes. Running... Well, that's a whole other issue, but one that calls for different footwear if you don't do the whole barefoot thing.
Yeah, I had flat (Nike) trainers a couple times, they were good. Barefoot not an option at gym. This thread isn't going well lol. Cool Nikes dammit! 🫂
I'd lift in old school Chucks. 🤷♂️
Nike does have a lot of well designed products, but I'm sure that someone else can recommend something that's equivalent or better function and fit. I'm just not that guy. 😅
All good. Got some good info. Wasn't the right forum for this question lol. Might consider the chucks though, for the gym. Pairs I've had in past get a bit gross too quickly when I wear them often. Thanks
Who cares? You go to the gym to get gross. Cute can wait for outside the gym. 😝
Also, you better be wearing mostly wool socks.
That's more important than the shoe material, IMO, unless you go sockless.
Oh yeah? I'm aware they're best for outdoors and hiking, but for everyday and warm weather? Is this about microplastics?
I wear wool socks in the summer in steel toe work boots as a welder. They keep my feet dryer and virtually stink-free.
Yes. And no. Prolonged skin contact with the stuff that makes plastic, well, plastic, is not good for humans, IMO.
Same for all synthetic clothing, too.
Yeah, I sort of got on that train a while ago, buying more pure fabrics, but found it expensive and pretty limiting. Then began to wonder if maybe the idea that contact really is a big deal might be a fad-notion and overblown, and decided to wait a bit and reconsider later. You're gonna start hating me even more but I like me some fancy athleisure, their cutting edge fabrics really do look and feel nice.
Dammit beave, I didn't wanna start worrying about this again...🤔
Meh. Merino wool is amazing.
Idgaf about looks.
Plastic is poison. I'm slowly phasing it out of my life.
Well, I highly recommend trying them on and walking around before purchasing, but the best running shoes I’ve ever had are hokas
Earth runners
Brooks ghost
Asics
Altra
NIKE! What is with you people?! You trying to get me jumped?
Thanks though, will check out ghosts... and that's a nope.
Ok, I just wanna look cool and fit in, I admit
Lolol
Um I think I'd go for some Nike trail running trainers then. Some make you look a bit too much like a graphic designer. I'd avoid those lol
lol, oddly good image that made sense to me
I'd more specifically get Nike gore tex trainers as few colours as possible, predominantly/ solely black.
Not liking ones that come up on search. Link? If too much trouble no worries
Let me see. I haven't looked in years. It's very possible they've gone full graphic designer
It's also possible US market will be different
These arent so bad. Possibly a bit too much going on
https://m.jdsports.co.uk/product/black-nike-pegasus-trail-5-gore-tex/19654522/
Feel a bit like Hoka style I'm not big on... but nicer than ones I was getting on searching.
Am curious now, what you go with personally? My guess before this convo would have been docs lol
Lol no no.
I tend to go with some sort of trail show. Usually ASICS. I usually have a look about for gtx options
Brooks and saucony have been the nicest shoes I've had but they tend to bit quite pricey.
Always twmpted by altra lone peak. But they never seem to be on sale. But probably worth the price

Friend of mine recommended these to me, but for hiking. Seen good things said about them here and there on nostr too (the altras). Wearing those out... not unreasonable for those who value function over form.
I think they look nice too lol
I'm starting to think you're a rapper lolol.
Ha e you considered the Balenciaga cum shoes for going out?

Morning ruined, thanks 🥴
Not a rapper, but i like to have spiffy shoes. I'm just horrible at finding them, and the Nike-type market out there really is tough. So many basic shoes I'll like enough to want, only to find out of stock or not in my size...
Check out some of the other replies, particularly the Flux ones (and others below). They seem cool to me thus far
It's a real shame Nike's ACG range went a bit crap. But they were always well made and looked nice. Might be worth checking that range to see what is out there tho.
I had a pair of LP Alpines (lone peaks) for the past two years cos I scored half off. Then bought a pair of Escalantes at BF this past year 25% off. Love my Altras. The LP Alpines are a bit dressier, but yes, hard to find on sale.
Check backcountry .com for sales. I only get the Original foot shape altras.
Saucony are a good alt too. Again I'd get a goretex version.

But what you really want are brooks ghost gtx lol

Missed these earlier. The brooks are actually nice looking. Making note of them for later. Went with flux trainers and tbd for casual for now.
This is how I see you now:

Thank you, very stylish. I could sense coolness points melting off of me engaging with a couple people on this topic lol.
Fwiw, here's how I pictured you prior to today. Now I don't know what to think. Some sort of San Francisco Google employee who's into the outdoors... do you regularly wear a camelback when out and about?

The pic is pretty accurate but with a fleece and sensible trainers lolol
I forget to suggest the heavens gate nikes! I'm so stoopid.
What's annoying, and part of why I even posed this on nostr, is the casual pair I liked was airmax 90 something or other, and I finally go to make final decision and notice that it's out of stock entirely. Every single time with Nike ffs (and it's on their f'ing site) as a search result). Don't they have armies of children who need work?! How are they the most popular shoe, yet I can't find anything decent in brick and mortar when I go, and online is often no better when I finally find something I like.
I maintain that for sports, ones ive played anyway, they're the best, and I've tried many
Ah yeah they are nice. I think you can't really go wrong with air force ones too. But they're associated a bit too much with Yookay roadman people and shop security stop me enough already without that look lol
Used to hate AF1s for some reason. Still kinda do, just a bit less
I quite like the suede ones, they seem a bit 'classier' lol.. The black ones are very much Yookay roadman and/or school uniform lol
Took me a sec to figure out "yookay" was UK, thought was some rap or Japanese thing at first. Roadman appears to be some stereotype I'm unfamiliar with based on search results. Like a street wear G-Star aesthetic ?
For lifting or running or both?
Def not running, that activity just isn't for me. Yes lifting, but I'm cheap so I also plan to wear them out, and I don't do such crazy stuff as deadlifts etc that physics is much of a factor.
It's just hard for me to find a cool sneaker lately
Gotcha bro. You are in Europe right? Anyways, try a barefoot shoes bc they are game changing. I have been trying Flux Footwear with sole inserts and I like them so far… Nikes are trash, constraint the toes too much and are uncomfortable
If anything, get a barefoot shoe. They feel good
These look interesting, thanks! Knew you'd come through.
Not in Europe, USA. Wonder what gave you that impression?!
Looking like I may be getting two pair now. Gym/function (these are contenders) and a casual pair that look a little cooler since I only really have one such pair right now and they're green-heavy, so don't like to wear them with everything
I swear I thought you were European lol my bad. USA bitches 🦅 🇺🇸
I used NoBull in the past when I did CrossFit. Really great shoes even though they are not barefoot
i love my vivobarefoots but they phased out teh nice little leather shoes made in africa which i was lucky to get one, i like those shoes although i wish they made a 9" tall boot version, the sole print was cool, like one of those maps of altitude over an area, i forget the name of that.
i got some "vegan" tall ones called ESC2 but honestly, this vegan shit with shoes is a fucking travesty, there is no better material for shoes than leather, ideally double layer kangaroo, but double layer goat would be ok, cowhide is too thick for shoes, though it probably makes good natural soles, instead of using plastic/rubber polyurethane shit.
i don't feel like i'm gonna have the shoes i really want until i make my own out of double layer roo with a CNC carved last based on a 3d scan of my own feet. maybe that's something i will get into while i'm stuck here in this nice little cottage next to the ocean, before i get my boat mission together.
Mleku with the curve ball suggestion. Gonna have a look.
Very interesting thoughts on rest.. I see you've thought about this before
I forgot to mention Olympus Footwear. I want to try his shoes but are kinda pricey (waiting for the corn to pop) so I can justify the expense
The guy that makes them is def an autistic ⭕️

i probably spent about a full month all day long dreaming about making boots when i was in prison in 2014
Note of the day winner for me lol. So much there. Agree with you on vegan shoes being trash. Tried some... what were they called...AllBirds back in the day. Just throw them in the wash they said... destroyed them. Second pair replacement didn't fair much better. Done with them since
No Bull are great too evnth
One last thing. Sizing recommends half up. Sound right? Read someone saying full size which I would never do unless heard first hand
Oh that’s tricky. I got the same size as my previous pair of shoes. Maybe 1/2 size up is the way to go?
I guess you can always return them if too big or too small?
Yeah, was just double checking before pull trigger. Was between the flux knit trainer and Strike Mvmt Haze in the end. Con with flux is they advertise a lot on instagram apparently (red flag), and con with haze could be that they're more stiff and meant for heavy lifting.
Didn't ask nostr so I'd overthink, so yolo gonna get flux on your endorsement.
These are pretty cool, maybe a bit loud for me but not inconceivable. Thank you.
However, like most shoes I come across that are remotely cool, they are not for sale... oh wait! They go on sale tomorrow! Very interesting...I could be the first one on my block!
Keeping in mind, thanks
I like my outfits quiet and my shoes loud. I like Cortez’s and Air Max 90s. But, nothing can replace the uniqueness of an SB Dunk drop. Those shoes will never be released again. History on your feet.
You make a very, very strong case sir. And thanks for the other model mentions, googling now 👀
For the gym, you want to have a thin sole. I use tolos for the gym. Walking around in Nikes are comfortable but not great for your spine, knees, etc.
lift barefoot, trust me
Not allowed in gym. I'm liking the ones el zeta (see replies) suggested so far, style and concept (barefoot-like). And I'm not some power lifter fwiw 😅
Lems for the gym and general lifestyle…wide toe box and zero heel to toe slope. Flux for running also wide box no slope
Yeah, friend of mine was pushing lems on me hard about 2 years ago. But he was the same guy who got me to try allbirds a long time ago, so I was skeptical. They look pretty good, may have to reconsider. Got a few contenders now! Thanks
Vivobarefoot for gym
Groundies for about town
What kind of gymming are we talking about?
Just steady going, nothing hardcore. I would be embarrassed to post stats, let's put it that way, even though they're aight. Just something I try to do regularly.
Already settled on Flux shoes (see comments). Have been wearing these old ugly reeboks and was tired of it
Yeah, I just was gonna say, if doing heavy squatting you don't want to be doing that in casual shoes for walking around town, but I didn't want to assume that's what you meant by gym
Try ‘ON’
