Switching to nostr:npub126ntw5mnermmj0znhjhgdk8lh2af72sm8qfzq48umdlnhaj9kuns3le9ll was very easy. I was able to spin up all of the Bitcoin services that I normally run in no time at all. I'm going to start recommending Start9. 🤙🏻

Going to be spinning up a second node soon and will try start9!

Noice.

Server one?

No, this is my own hardware.

Good thing it’s not a medically attached hardware.

Did you buy the lite, one or pure?

No, I didn't not buy their hardware.

What’s your setup

11th gen Intel i7

16GB RAM

2TB SSD

It's a laptop that's a couple years old that.

*No, I did not

Damn typos.

I’m also curious what hardware you’re using

11th gen Intel i7

16GB RAM

2TB SSD

It's a laptop that's a couple years old that.

Estimated costs to get a setup similar for us plebs ?

The 2TB SSD was $92. The used Dell laptop was $150. I was able to get a good deal on this through work. You can get a used Dell micro form factor computer for well under $200 though.

Thank you. You’re always so helpful. 🤙🏼💜

Buy a cheap Mac mini off eBay. $200 can get you 2012 model worth 1TB. works so well

Running it on your own box or one of theirs?

My own hardware.

Yep 🤙 been using Start9 for 2 years now

any advice on switching from Umbrel?

Switching from Umbrel?

Nearly 3 years on Umbrel. I had zero issues on Umbrel. I wanted something more robust and not a Raspberry Pi. I also like the fact that StartOS uses an SSL cert for local traffic.

Does it use SSL for non-local traffic?

I'm running everything over Tor.

Have you checked recently released Umbrel Home? Much faster than Raspberry Pi 4.

The modern home LAN is an adversarial environment. SSL is a must.

What made you switch?

I ask as an Umbrel user … I’m not completely sold on it tbh …

I am actually very happy with Umbrel.

I understand, security in Umbrel has also been a concern of mine for a while.

(Still have to upgrade from the RBPi though)

Thanks for the info

🤜🏼⚡️🤛🏼

You could buy used HP Elitedesk g3 mini or even better hardware which ia now way cheaper than raspberry pi, absolutely great machine for a node and LN node

thanks man, just watched this one.

so the biggest risk with umbrel is the lack of backup/restore function.

nostr:nostr:npub1aghreq2dpz3h3799hrawev5gf5zc2kt4ch9ykhp9utt0jd3gdu2qtlmhct do we have such plan on the roadmap?

The backup feature is fantastic.

Do you think I’d be able to spin this up on any modern laptop? Wanted a cheap Linux one for a while to securely manage wallets etc. Need something portable. Will dig in a bit.

That's what I'm using. So, yes 😁

Cheers. Are you at all concerned about the whole Intel Management Engine thing that (e.g) Purism wrestle with, or is that too far down the rabbit hole of OpSec paranoia?

Love my @start9, makes me feel part of the network. Currently getting my lightning node running and opening channels, after this, a nostr relay!!!!!

Quick question, once have installed start9 am I able to add an external SSD and have bitcoin core data stored there?

What is it?

I have been comparing Umbrel with Embassyos. Well, nothing to loose, I give it a try.

Interesting. Can I whack this on a Pi to play with?

Yes

Think I’ll give it a go on the spare PI - seems simple enough, although looks like it requires a pruned blockchain? Or is that for SD only with no attached SSD? I’m such a noob with all of this…

You don't need to run pruned.

Is it possible to migrate my ln channels from umbrel to start9? Running umbrel on Pi now

I wish I would have gotten the pro though. Have a feeling there's going to be a lot more applications coming in the next couple years.

So happy with the pro. Get a second node

Is it possible to migrate from Umbrel to Start9 on the same hardware? As I understood from nostr:npub1rxysxnjkhrmqd3ey73dp9n5y5yvyzcs64acc9g0k2epcpwwyya4spvhnp8 video, he used 2 hardware devices to migrate.

It's possible, but I'm unsure the process of getting your lightning node over safely.

maybe if you clone your existing drive to external storage. i wouldnt mess with dual booting from a single disk

Possible? Yes. You'd need to do all of it manually and backup and restore your LND config yourself. It would a huge pain in the ass. Two devices makes it immensely easier.

I installed it on a 8Gb Raspberry Pi 4 a couple of weeks ago, really liking it. Nice tidy GUI with plenty of things to play with. Performance seems decent as well. Still got an Umbrel & have tried myNode, both of which are decent. But I'm preferring the @Start9

About time that I do this.

For me minibolt is the best, it is the cleanest installation I could imagine, you do everything yourself and you learn about linux and a bit of python

And what is most important it runs on whatever hardware (PC) you want, so you can also upgrade your hardware which means it can run on a very powerful machines which raspberry is NOT and LN node does require a better piece of hardware

https://v2.minibolt.info/home/readme

I enjoyed building a Bitcoin and CLN node from scratch last summer. It was a project that I did to keep me busy. I was going crazy not being able to do much when I first got home from surgery 😂 Anyway, I haven't heard of this project before. I'll check it out just to see what they use. I like using docker containers for nearly everything at home.

It's a fork of raspibolt but aimed for PC instead of raspberry pis, it is great, I believe it uses containers, you can install almost all known apps and run them from home or via Tor from distance, simply solid software able to run on the best performing hardware you can imagine and I think this is exactly what is needed, simple step by step guide with explanations that everyone can follow and you learn more about linux as you go

Ditto. Honestly, there are some small tradeoffs, but by far the best in UX by explaining how to config and run. Easy access to logs are great too.

It just works.

my umbrel was more of a franken umbrel. i ran custom or newer docker containers for btcpay server, lnbits, and peerswap. we'll see if i need to do that with start9. for now ill leave it stock though.

I want to install Start9 in a Proxmox virtual machine. Do you think it would be possible to use an NFS share to store data and point Start9 to that folder?
