Nostriches, I need your help: I’m moderating a panel at nostr:npub167n5w6cj2wseqtmk26zllc7n28uv9c4vw28k2kht206vnghe5a7stgzu3r next month that will take a critical look at the current state of nostr development and potential areas for improvement, and I want to make it a pleb-sourced effort.

Reply below with your nostr criticisms and areas for improvement and I will pick the ten best ones to pose to the panelists.

How can we improve privacy to make nostr a better freedom tool for those in oppressive regimes?

Decent search would be a great enhancement.

Value for value isn't working

Maybe V4V is working by showing there isn’t value in the way ā€œcreatorsā€ think that there is (and/or should be) value?

Zaps are a feedback loop incentivising bad content/ the bitcoin slogan chatroom dilemma of nostr

Private comms over nostr is unsolvable (user and relay level) without bundling in tor or another privacy network

key rotation

offline signing

kind 0 and relay discovery

It simply doesn’t relate to most people. Most of the memes/posts/culture are too niche and makes people who are about btc feel less in the community when it is not so welcoming and inviting as they have advertised. I’m not into tech/and am blue collar and most of the stuff I see posted I don’t understand or relate too, the stuff I do I follow and comment on.

how can all apps fit together?

Probably an edge case, but:

Social graph backup/recovery and client config interoperability.

Had 2 instances where different clients completely trashed my profile. Relays, contacts, etc. all gone.

**Sovereign Webs of Trust**

Nostr needs standards for marking accounts as ā€œtrustedā€ and for subscribing to and sharing ā€œfiltersā€ (from this web of trust) across clients.

Need to be able to have a different set of keys for each client, all linked to a single account. You could just sign a nostr message granting that key to act as your key for a limited time or with limited priviledges.

nsecbunker could do this

I think it's built to solve the same problem, by creating a single server which holds the keys and signs of behalf of your various apps. I'm thinking you just publish a note saying "from now on trust messages signed with xxxx as if they were signed by my master key", and have peers do the verification.

Basic Education: I’m constantly astounded how much Nostr fud is on Nostr. Many people still seem to think if a single relay censors them their access to read and write notes is gone forever.

What is a good noob setup to ensure you’re resilient and explain why it is resilient.

Here's a critical look at Nostr's development and some areas for improvement:

**Positives:**

* **Simple protocol:** Nostr's strength lies in its simplicity. It focuses on message signing and public key cryptography, making it easy to understand and implement.

* **Decentralization:** Nostr relies on relays for message propagation, not a central server. This fosters censorship resistance and avoids single points of failure.

* **Active development:** There's a growing community actively developing libraries, tools, and clients for Nostr.

**Areas for Improvement:**

* **Discovery:** Finding and following others on Nostr can be challenging. There's no built-in discovery mechanism, making bootstrapping difficult for new users.

* **User Experience:** Many Nostr clients are in early stages of development, leading to a sometimes clunky user experience. Features and interface consistency need improvement.

* **Standardization:** While NIPs (Nostr Improvement Proposals) exist, not all clients support them uniformly. Better adherence to these standards would improve interoperability.

**Suggestions:**

* **Develop Decentralized Discovery Protocols:** Implement decentralized search mechanisms that allow users to find each other without relying on centralized directories.

* **Focus on User-Friendly Clients:** Invest in creating intuitive and user-friendly clients that make interacting with Nostr easier for newcomers.

* **Promote NIP Adoption:** Encourage developers to rigorously follow and implement NIPs to ensure a more consistent user experience across clients.

By addressing these areas, Nostr can become even more robust and user-friendly, attracting a wider audience and solidifying its position as a viable decentralized social media alternative.

- Better search.

- Better handling of video content uploads.

- GIFs

Hot take: It’s currently trying to mimic the 6th largest social media on the planet. Ignoring the needs the 1st social media on the planet is solving.

Bitcoin and NOSTR have made it cool to be labelled "pleb". Love it !

Would love to be able to integrate FreeWallet into Nostr so we can send XCP and rare pepes to each other.
