Be honest with me please:

Should I wait until I have whatever equipment I need to put out a professionally executed podcast before I start? Or should I use what I have and quality improves gradually as I acquire what I need?

Use what you have and grow from there.

What do you consider “professional?”

At the very least: clean audio and high-quality video

Logitech brio 🎥

Blue Yeti 🎙️

Lightning as needed 🔦

Not sure what else you’d “need” other than this to “get started.”

🤙

Start and build

Start with what you have

YES

Unless your equipment is trash, I’d go for it.

Start, and treasure the feedback you get.😁👍

Use what you have. Your equipment and editing skills will both improve with time.

I’m new to this and just started building (1month ago). Adding as I go.

Tim Ferris famously used under $100 setup for years

Bullish

I'd say to start with what you have IF it is at least reasonably good. Doesn't have to be *perfect* but at least good *enough*

the latter, do not overthink it, just ship and improve from there

+1, there‘ll always be ways to improve – figure all of that out as you go. Live and learn – all the best!

This is what I say to clients lol

I need to be my own client. 😅

I want to do video and audio at the same time, but the learning curve involved in using a good camera and a good mic, and how to connect all of that and stream it is making me freeze up.

Thank you, going to order a podcast mic to make it easy for myself instead of trying to hook up my music vocals mic and just START 🙏🙏🙏

Logitech 4K webcam works very well, looks great IMO.

You don’t need much. $150 microphone + computer and you’re good to go

Can you recommend a decent one in that range? Will order literally now lol

Mac user if that matters.

Shure MV7

It’s more like $250 but it’s the best sound you’ll get for the money, & having a USB connection means you don’t have to buy any other XLR equipment to get started

That’s on sale for $270 😬

Amazon just showed me $249 🤷

Without the stand. She can always tie a rope from the ceiling

lol nah

I got a blue yeti micro just for shits. Doing nests with that starting tonight.

If things go well I’ll spring for a setup that will include a better room setup for sure.

I can go overboard with hobby ideas. 😂

I’d be interested to know where you end up with the progress

OK yeah, I found that one. I think the difference is the other one comes with a tripod. Which I’m going to need so I might as well just spend the extra 20 if this is a good quality jump off for me.

Honestly phone & headphone mics are often good enough in a quiet room. I bought the blue yeti to start & ended up kinda regretting it. I really prefer my phone to some of the sound characteristics I got with the yeti. I’m very happy with the MV7

Sure sm58 microphone + focusrite scarlet 2i2

Doing podcasts for years with this combo 💪 doesnt break the bank but very good quality

The sure sm58 is a beast. You always get it often very cheap used. It is almost indestructible. You could park a tank on it. Heavily used at live gigs. You can buy it used without worries

The SM58 was a shitty mic when it came out and still is today. It’s popularity comes purely from price and reliability.

No self respecting audio engineer would ever use it to record anything.

If you need a mic for podcasting, go with a USB condenser mic. Decent ones starting at 50 bucks.

I do 😅

Well, maybe you should start respecting yourself 🤷

Seriously.

The benefit of the SM58 is that you can throw it with 50 others loosely in a box, ship it around the planet and then throw a full stack turned to 11 at it.

The sound quality is really awful.

It doesn’t matter for its use case, because it’s meant for garage bands and touring, where usually it’s the pa and the acoustics that screws up the sound more badly than the mic can.

But for recording you can get better stuff cheaper.

Thanks for the hint. I am pretty satisfied with the results tho and even do audiobook recordings with it 😅🙏

You do you 🤷

In my case the issue with the audiobooks is my voice… mic doesn’t help with that unfortunately

But seriously, try a large membrane condenser one day, you’ll be blown away by the difference.

Dynamic mics where design to handle extreme stage situations, not for the studio.

Unfortunately i life in a very noisy place and condenser mics pick up all that stuff. The sm58 does a great job of only picking up my voice

Yes, for canceling background noise it is decent. Check out Audix OM5 and OM7 if you need something with better quality and even more background reduction.

The OM7 is overkill for you though. It’s meant to not have the drum set on the vocals of the drummer.

🙏💜

But always start as soon as you can. The learnings you get by doing it should be rather sooner than later 💪

Blue yeti professional was the one that came to mind.

Oooh this one is on sale for $104, doesn’t need a stand and can arrive overnight… 🫡

Start with that one and then level up if you find yourself having success. The first episode of the joe rogan podcast is hot garbage technically and content wise and now it’s the largest pod on earth.

Do what you can, where you are, with what you have available to you and then keep leveling up.

This. I’m not gonna have regrets about spending 100 on something that becomes nothing more than a novelty to me. Might feel differently if I spent 300. If I’m doing this and enjoying it and I’m consistent, I’ll level up. ORDERED

I wouldn’t recommend that. Start with a dynamic mic. The blue yeti is a condenser if i am right. Pucks up a lot of room noice. You either have to have a professional room setup or do a lot of processing afterwards. Dynamic mics like the sure sm58 don’t have that problem. They pretty much only pick up what you speak right into it

AKG Pro Audio P220 $150

You’ll need an audio interface for about $100-$150

And a mic stand of your choice

This is the best one in the $100 range at the moment https://www.beyerdynamic.de/fox.html

The Shure MV7 is fantastic

Girl start that podcast tonight.. i will be waiting for a link 🫡💪🏽💪🏽💜🧡💜🧡💜🧡💜

"Done is better than perfect"

Go for it!!!

If you are concerned about the audio quality, Adobe can help you for free... Take a look:

https://podcast.adobe.com/enhance

It's AMAZING what this free tool can make!!!

Cool, thank you I’ll check it out

Em caráter de urgência! Só comece, todo o resto é processo.

Eu tenho um podcast e canal no YouTube, bitcoin only...

Bro. Você edita tudo no cel?

😁 é a ferramenta que eu tenho... Demorei muito a começar esperando o melhor momento... Comece como pode, hijeno canal já tem quase 70 vídeos. Agradeço ao meu eu do passado por ter começado!

Cara. Muito show Jeff. Editar tudo pelo cel tem suas peculiaridades. Parabéns pelo trampo. Os vídeos ficam qualidade 🎯⚡️✅

if my song isn’t good with sm57s (a relatively cheap mic) on everything, then my song isn’t good.

If you wait til everything is perfect you're never gonna start.

Depends on the audience.

Perfect is the enemy of done

Invest in a good studio quality mic. The rest is trivial.

I use a snowball for my streams and it's a very good microphone. definitely enough for a podcast. But, any microphone with omni directional setting will do. omni basically captures only the noise / voice directly in front of the microphone and cuts out the moment you lean away from the mic.

🤪 awesome. Great start. If it sticks you can follow your dream of twitching fortnite

lol if it sticks I’ll invest a little more into it $ wise - let’s see if I can do this at all first 🙏

Fortnite lol 😂

I got mandibles queued. Soon

I typically buy hard covers only but I’m not about to spend $50 so here we are.

I crossed that mental bridge too. Soft it is 🤣

Just started reading #Mandibles

I’m excited, it’s been in my cart for a couple weeks. LFG

The Mandibles is great!

Just get started. There are plenty of people here who record podcasts/audio to answer questions. Content is more important than anything

The content IS the most important piece, and also consistency. 🫶

Your post is creating a lot of discussion.

Gotta remember you’re gonna sound raw and unpolished for the first dozen or so episodes, too. “But you still have that good taste” as Malcolm Gladwell put it. Content gets better over time anyway, even outside of the equipment.
