There's still a lot of value in experimentation but I'm going to be time-box my PoC-building time.

Probably depends on how much time you spend on it and if you're having fun learning. I imagine if you're super excited, spend a lot of time on it and enjoy it, it probably goes more quickly. Don't know how many years though...
We have lots of developers. Most of them work in the fiat mines and have families and stuff.
