Shouldn't first class be in the rear of airplanes because that has a higher survival rate in crashes?
Discussion
No, but since they board the plane first they should go to the back.
The plane should be boarded back to front
Logical.

But then they cant get off first, a much bigger perk than being boarded first.
Not always. IIRC Air India for example struck tail first due to a positive nose attitude. There are some studies about this, I think the best seats are in the middle-ish, but still thin chances of survival.
Plane crashes are so rare it's not even worth thinking about. I had a psycho boss (for other reasons) who would book out plane tickets in the back based on Lopp's reasoning and it always felt like psychotic behaviour rather than a legit strategy for anything.
Always thought the same thing π»
I always thought the same thing, I used to fly unaccompanied minors when I was kid, we got to sit right at the back, next to the flight attendants.
Plus, you don't have the riffraff walking through your area.
The only disadvantage is deplaning. You try to prevent the front 2/3 of the plane from leaving and you'll have a riot. Since deplaning is the worst part of air travel (aside from all the bogus security), first class will likely always remain in the front, no matter the statistics of surviveablity.
People in first class look as miserable as the plebs in the back: scrolling their feed.
Plus they could facilitate boarding #FirstInLastOut
In the back, your odds of surviving a flight stay go from 0.9999998 to 0.9999999 but your odds of getting off the plane within 5 minutes of arriving at the terminal go from 0.99 to 0.05.
NB: I made up these numbers.
Accurate
The sentiment is correct though. Crashes are such a tail event that worrying about whether your seat number survives is pointless. If crash, then dead is the likeliest outcome for something catastrophic, because it's usually a) all survived or b) all dead. Some survivors is even rarer than the event of a crash in itself.
In other words, what Lopp has pointed out is essentially pointless.
Safety should not be a privilege of the wealthy. Just as little as privacy.
Wut. Airplanes are the safest mode of transport. The difference in survival rate by literal seat number is so small as to be meaningless. The odds you'll be dead and someone else on your plane will live in aggregate across all plane trips you will ever take is so small you're probably more likely to get struck by lightning and live twice over a lifetime.
As a private pilot, I understand aviation safety. My point was that safety, however small the margin, shouldnβt be tied to wealth as a principle.
I absolutely agree with that principle. My point though is seat selection/location doesn't offer any kind of increase or decrease in safety. The difference is so marginal as to be meaningless in this specific case.
They're not paying for survival, they're just paying for a comfier seat and less people to rub elbows with in case of a crash π π€£
Wait, you're telling me that there are more seats behind that curtain thingy?
It was put in front to remove resistance of executive order 80085(bitcoin confiscation. Beware!
Progressive seating
First class is meant for comfort, not survival rates.
It's first in everything, even first in dying
actually it is the middle.
Isn't part of the experience with first class that you don't get to hear as much noise coming from the engines as people in the back or closer to the engines.
Seating which is most likely to survive in a crash depends on how the plane makes impact... and that is determined by the pilot (who may want to increase their own survival rate by crashing with a sufficient pitch)... or the hijacker.
But anyway, I thought you were gonna try optimise the seating for other reasons when I started reading the tweet, like that one CGP grey video.
$300 sushi, now musing on first class quirks, your priorities are showing.

No π
On top the airplane might be the safest option, even when it comes to comfort and best view.
Air circulation (smoke) in an airplane cabin goes from the front to the rear.
To be considered in case of fire on board.
