When I was young I was angry.

My temper was a big problem.

But over the years I’ve found that things you do in anger boomerang back on you.

Usually quite quickly.

Best to not give into anger.

It’s like holding a hot coal and waiting to throw it at someone else.

It burns you, more than it does them.

Our world, galaxy and universe is built on chaos and contrast. You have to embrace these laws of physics and transcend them in to your daily life. The contrast is what gives birth to the realization of what you want. When you know what you don't want, only then do you know what you do want. Then its up to you to embrace what you want and see that in your daily reality. That's how you will be able to use any anger in your reality to create more of what you want, not more of what you don't want.

How did you manage to do that? I think it's an impulsive thing right? Mindfulness?

Yeah basically I take a beat and create a pause where I can decide to act on the impulse or not. I still have the impulse I just don’t act upon it.

Beginner advice:

Just silently count to10.

If that doesn't help, count to 100.

Yeah a few focused breath will go a long way. But not sure if a kid can apply this strategy

Low time preference

I had such a bad temper when I was a kid, the whole extended family nicknamed me Oscar. As in Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street.

The thing that finally allowed me to tame it was the sport of archery. I used to get so pissed off with a miss, that my whole round would get ruined. I’d break arrows. I’d throw my bow into the bush. Fortunately my competitiveness and my desire to win made me realize I had to calm the fuck down and be more Zen if I wanted to win. It worked. 40/40 first place finishes at local meets. Three Canadian National championship golds, two North American championship golds, and this gold in Europe at the IFAA world meet in Ljungby, Sweden.

I still lose my shit occasionally, but I make sure it’s for a good cause.

I agree with this sentiment mostly, but I think anger can still have value when sourced from a particular place. It's fear that I don't think has any real use case any more in our society- preyed upon for so long it has lost all worth. Most anger is sourced in irrational fear, and is therefore worthless, but the wrath felt by a mother protecting her child is deeper than that, and is a valuable resource that can be used for good.

All anger arises from fear.

All fear is irrational but some fears go beyond the egoic sense of self.

The deep anger that arises from the fear of something pure or innocent being corrupted or defiled, can be harnessed.
