I've been wanting to host a local Bitcoin meetup for years. I am finally doing it. I had to sign into Facebook and create an event though. That's the only way to get locals in my small town. Besides the dirty feeling of using Facebook, I'm feeling optimistic. Hopefully I can get a couple people to show up.

Awesome!! ⚡️ I’m excited to hear how goes 🫂
This is awesome
Derek!! May I suggest meetup.com, I think many use that.. although I imagine if you are trying to reach local friends and fam then fb works better.. Do notice boards at health food stores still exist there?
My down is super small with 13K people. No one uses Meetup here.
Are there other towns anywhere nearby? If so then you should try meetup. People drive 2hr+ to attend our meet. (If you want help paying for meetup, DM me.)
Meetup.com costs money, 7€ per month for organizers.
Huge. Love the feeling of taking that step. Hoping for the best! Don’t be surprised if you attract some shitcoiners though. Don’t worry, they cycle out. Once I refill my wallet (sorry I’ve zapped way too much) first beers on me.
Congrats!
Meetup.com is better than Facebook.
No one in my town of 13K people uses Meetup. Also, isn't there a cost to use Meetup?
What about a good old poster in the supermarket? Start small and let word to mouth do the rest. Fok fb.
Good luck, bitcoin meetups are so fun! The meetup here in Utah is amazing. We use Meetup.com to organize. Maybe try posting the Meetup group to the FB group to migrate people over?
I looked at Meetup, but it isn't free, is it? I thought it was $11 a month?
I'm not sure if it's free or not for the person that creates the group. It's free for people to join the group though. Our meetups are sponsored by Bitrefill, it's a super fun time. Our next meetup is March 1. https://www.meetup.com/meetup-group-zuyvgaos/events/291535416/
when i looked last week i didn't see a way to host an event without paying.
yep!
Just start. Even if it's just you and the bartender.
People will come...they will come. In due course...they will come....yeah.
Was contemplating the same come spring
Awesome, as a host of one, best advice is to keep it going regardless of attendance, it takes time
absolutely. ill keep trying.
Been teaching a class for local Bitcoin Beginners. Building local interest, momentum, and networking is my goal.
I’ll bring the orange soda!! :)
Buidl it and they will come!
Didn’t want to do it, but now ended up being co-organizer of Riga Bitcoin Meetups. But at least not all organization is on me.
Congrats on hosting Bitcoin meetups, lads! 👏👏
Did you look at meetup.com? Seems to generate good traffic for coin meetups around the world
Besides the dirty feeling 😂🤣🤙⚡
I've posted on FB only a couple times in the past 3 years, each one for a very specific reason. I hate that place.
Surprised you still had the account 😆
Deleted everything there, except for WhatsApp. Totally done with it for already a few years
Only thing I miss is the marketplace. You could sell a microwave turntable for 25 cents on that bitch.
We'll have a marketplace here soon enough ;)
Facebook has become useful for a single purpose, localized eBay. I sell my old stuff on there and it gets picked up really fast. Other than that, I stay way away from that place
I'm very interested to hear how it goes. I have moved from Zurich to a smaller town in Switzerland and am linking up with local Bitcoiners now. Actual adoption happens if Bitcoin finds support and usage outside of metropoles.
Hosting a local #Bitcoin meetup is a great idea! Don't worry about using Facebook - the goal is to spread awareness about Bitcoin. Focus on making it a success, and you'll create a thriving community in your town which will turn away of scam like Facebook after some time anyway. They learn.
What’s Facebook?
Facebook's event manager really is a nice tool. Wish there was an open, decentralized equivalent. It really leans on Facebook's network effect though, that would have to be replicated in a decentralized manner...
Can you share some pictures? And of course, can it be built on Nostr?
Where is the meetup up? #[0]
You can't do that in the Philippines...it's littered with Shitcoins.
