Today I spoke to a Newfoundlander who’s never left the island. Not once.

This fella insisted he has everything he needs and no reason to leave - something I have heard from time to time, but I wanted to see what Nostr thought.

Canadians: how many of the 13 provinces/territories have you visited?

Americans: how many states have you visited?

What are your assumptions about anyone who answered “1?”

Some folks don't have the wanderlust.

I mean, that’s as low as you get on the wanderlust scale.

Lol

Yo machine - long time no see!

G’morning! Been busy. How about you???

Busy in the woods 😉 always good to see ya around.

Agreed.

I'm trying not to judge people's reason for their comfort. For some it's genuine, for others they may be scared or haven't felt it worth the bother idk. I have family members that will probably die without leaving the handful of states they grew up in. Those same people have lived in the same 2 square miles their whole life, including the generations before them. The flip side, is there is often a pressure to "see things before you die" not a genuine interest in travel. Idk I'm not a touristy person, I enjoy seeing those things but I'm like, yeah that's neat, back to work. On my second trip, I lived in Alaska for a couple months and honestly never really traveled past 60 miles outside of anchorage. Just didn't interest me, I was enjoying my time working. But I also never grew up around those who had an interest in travel or seeing things.

Interesting! I don’t feel that everyone has to “see the world”. And I (clearly) love my home immensely. But in my heart I crave seeing different lands.

2 Chips, different takes. 😉

Also nostr:npub1qdjn8j4gwgmkj3k5un775nq6q3q7mguv5tvajstmkdsqdja2havq03fqm7 , Alaska and the Yukon completely enthralled me. Maybe because I wasn’t interested in my work there, but I spent every second I could exploring.

Clearly this is why you’re better at “computers”.

XD. Funny enough, when I was up there, it was "working on trucks" sort of. Still a computer guy, but I was up there to work in the shop for a bit.

It's pretty everywhere, didn't feel like I needed to go anywhere, just look around you know. A moose in your window in the morning, to the left a mountain, to your right the sea. East was the city up on the coast, north was another town. Just being there on the porch was an adventure enough I guess.

Looking back, sure I wish I did more things but I was much younger, had girl problems and was traveling alone XD

I can always go back, but I've been fighting the $1200 plane tickets.

Oh I get that! Was doing long distance with only a satellite phone I could use weekly. I was young too - had to beg myself to go exploring on my own. It was a formative part of my willingness to be out with little supports.

Now, just a comment… $1200 would get ya over to explore things over in Newfoundland. 😆

No kidding. I wonder what difference in distances is? That price is also with 2-3 connections and usually a layover. Every time i've gone, with time change and delays, it's taken me over 20 hours to get back home XD. It's rough.

Have a look - here’s the province’s major airport tag: YYT

It’s hard to get here. I do the multi connections to basically anywhere. they have recently put in direct flights to Europe, so things are opening up!

It's fun to go on a trip, by I'm always happy to be back home. I've visited 7 province, 1 territory and 2 states.

I was raised on the prairie, and I'm always relieved to return after visiting the mountains or heavily forested areas. Too much stuff sticking out of the ground, blocking my view. I feel the same way about large cities with sky scrapers, etc.

I feel ya on the skyscrapers/city vistas. Mountains of metal…

I love the Prairies - our barrens here are like mini prairies. The long views feel like freedom incarnate. I can only imagine being outside of that environment feeling claustrophobic.

I would like to visit the East Coast, the only provinces I've never been. I've got relatives in Sackville, NB. Someday I'll get out there.

Sackville is a TIME! I use to visit MtA regularly. You know what they say: East Coast Best Coast 😂

Haha, I'll bet it is 😂 They used to regularly visit the farm in SK every few years, bring fresh lobster and we'd have a huge surf and turf BBQ family reunion. The East coasters knew how to party! 🍖🦞🍻

The further east, the better the party too. By the time you get to Cape Breton it’s absolutely lit 🔥 don’t even get me started on Newfoundlanders. It’s next level.

I'm in Alberta, so I know a lot of Newfoundland folks. I think AB is a popular destination for work. Back in my rigging days it seemed like half my co-workers 😂

Yeah. My friends don't like to go anywhere so if I want to see things I have to go alone. I'm a big fan of US rural areas. I've always lived close the Appalachians over here... nothing is flat... I've come to dislike it quite a bit compared to mostly flat or rolling out in the midwest or down south.

I was raised in Saskatchewan, a very flat province, in an area that is called "The Flats" by locals 😂 The family farm was 3 sq miles, with a height variation of about 3 meters over the whole area, so at least we had one hill. It's the bottom of an ancient riverbed from when the glaciers melted, incredibly flat, but also great fertile land.

Ryan took the words out of my mouth.

Do you fall in this category? What would motivate you to travel if you had never left home?

I have big wanderlust and want to see all the things 😂. I've been all over the state (Texas), a handful of other states and Carribbean islands (on cruises). Hoping to get out more now that the kid is being home schooled and our schedule is more open.

I’m with you! I’ve not been to Texas, but it’s been on my list since I watched Lonesome Dove a very very long time ago. 😂

Maybe I need to make a movie to encourage your tourism here. 🤣

Lol, seeing your hike pics and videos makes me want to visit!! 😍 just beautiful

I have visited most other US states and a bunch of different countries. Someone like that i’m sure feels very content where they’re at, so that’s good, but i can’t help assume they don’t realize they’re missing out on so much more

I have to agree - it’s a big big world with much to see.

i have visited every state, and have wandered B.C.

i wouldnt assume much but that the person is happy where they are

I like that take. 5 ⭐️s on your travel record!

I've visited roughly as many countries, as there are US States. It is always nice to return home, though🙏🏻.

I have probably been to 25-30 states

Got any favourites?

I really enjoyed hiking the Appalachian mountains in TN/ NC and NH/ ME.

I also love the boundary waters in MN.

Fun fact! The Appalachian trail ends here in NL.

Yeah, I only hiked the 2183 miles here in the states. Georgia to Maine

Nice - I’ve done the Maine portion. And loved Mt Katahdin!

I would like to hike it again, it was rainy when I hiked katahdin. Maybe I'll take the knifes edge trail. 🤔

3 Provinces.

3 States.

Plans to visit many more.

A good mix!

We have traveled a lot around the states and Canada as well. Although things have changed, we used to just pull off on a quiet spot and camp. Now you are expected to pay high ticket camping in most places. We still car camp plenty but it's different. Deffinetly just define the places we are shooting for and go direct. Much less wandering than before.

Yes! I find this about the mainland, less really rural areas. I still car camp regularly at the end of long hikes out of convenience. I’ve yet to catch any grief, but again I’m where the population is very low.

I’m still in my -stop in every cove phase. 😆

Now that I'm thinking about it, I've only really visited 6 states for any length of time. That's less than I thought. For anyone who answers 1, I respect their contentment.

Quality time over quantity?

I have traveled outside of Canada in the 80s. Came back in the 90s, haven't left my province yet. I drove into Saskatchewan once, by accident.

That’s how I first visited NWT!

I am missing the territories and Newfoundland.

I’m missing 1 territory, and 1 province.

Nunavat & manitoba?

Ding ding ding!

Its only because I knew you were up north but central is kinda out of the way lol

Would love to hear a good reason to go. But I’ve got a couple others places I’m much more interested in going.

45. Always more to learn and see.
