Oh dear. I have so muchh to learn. I thought running a node was automatically a Lightning Node on the Blockchain. So they are two different things…this explains folks calling LN level 2. Or is that Level 3? Gawd hep me. nostr:note1u0m2j5tly88n9gqcqhj3kn2q9rglam0dytctn2qc5ykzcr7c8whsvxd0f7

L2 is lightning.
Thank you my ₿rother. Is there a book you would recommend for one such as me, that I would not irritate TF out of #TheNostr?
Running a node isn’t too bad, and I started out with no technical experience
1. Figure out your hardware (raspberry pi, start9, etc)
2. Find your OS that you want to run (do research on umbrel, start9, raspblitz and a few others)
3. Download Lightning app and sync blockchain on core
4. Once blockchain is downloaded, you can then start opening Lightning channels to peers and self hosting your own Lightning/ verifying block chain on core
Thank you for the brevity and clean point-based outline. Looking forward to it! My brain needs a challenge!
I wrote a DIY guide even better than a Start9/Umbrell. There are a few chapters to read.
Looks self-explanatory. Looking forward to figuring some of this out. Thanks so much for your guidance. Whole new language.
You're doing great!
There are nodes at each layer of bitcoin.
Layer 0 node - People! The gossip amongst each other sharing stories and experiences. The most critical nodes of bitcoin. These nodes never truly sync and the consensus is super small in size.
Layer 1 node - The timechain nodes. These nodes maintain the ledger (or a portion of the ledger) aka blockchain and handle transactions. Thes nodes also gossip but mainly about the state of the network. Sharing transaction and block data amongst each other. Each node has it's own current snapshot of pending transactions (the mempool of that node) but all agree on historical transactions for the most part. The older the transaction, the more likely it's agreed upon. After about an hour, it's pretty certain that transaction will not change, ever,
Layer 2 node - Lightning! These nodes create channels between each other to swap small amount of sats back and forth. They'll also route payments among their channel partners. They take a small fee to do so. The biggest consensus piece of this is between two channel partners. They have to agree on the balance of their channel (who sent what amount to whom) and can go to the Layer 1 chain to dispute this. This is where zaps live.
Layer 3?? There is debate as to what constitutes Layer 3, but the debate is mainly among Layer 0.
Keep studying bitcoin! And continue to sync your Layer 0 node with others. :)
You are very kind and patient. nostr:npub1aeh2zw4elewy5682lxc6xnlqzjnxksq303gwu2npfaxd49vmde6qcq4nwx has been extremely encouraging and even invited us to Nodestritch. We ate on it but reading the replies make me aware how surface we are, and how deep they are. We travel for weeks at a time ( at certain times a year), and can’t be as attentive to setting up our node as we need to be. Node on the run!
It’s a journey.
And 🤔
You should consider checking out nostr:npub126ntw5mnermmj0znhjhgdk8lh2af72sm8qfzq48umdlnhaj9kuns3le9ll ‘s StartOS. They use TOR for easy (albeit slower) access to your node from anywhere. And the interface is quite user friendly.
You could run it at a friend or family’s house if that’s available to you.
OR YOU COULD PUT A NODE IN YOUR PHONE WITH nostr:npub1xnf02f60r9v0e5kty33a404dm79zr7z2eepyrk5gsq3m7pwvsz2sazlpr5 😁⚡️
Until you loose your phone on a ride at Disney world 🌎
Have to go to Disney world to lose the phone.
🧠
Not going to groomer town.
Too funny! We made our last trip to Disney decades ago. It’s supercool that one can run a node on a phone.
So you recommend the Zeus node phone sitch.
If your goal is to run self custody Lightning with no hardware setup, it’s the way to go.
Zeus has node in the phone? I’ve been trying to connect my own ln node to zeus.
You can do that, too.
Yes, at least, it sounds easier, less cumbersome. But when you get in the mountains, there is no internet in a lot of the places we go and stay for quite a while. So the node in the phone motif might be wrong, too, for our sitch, or, am I missing something?
Haha we are all learning! I learned the most from setting up a raspiblitz node. Search for “raspiblitz” GitHub and follow instructions, or go with start9 or umbrel Lightning nodes are much more complicated and involve opening your own channels to truly become a lightning peer. Whereas Bitcoin node can run your own electrum server and verify your own transactions on the base chain
You’re very kind. Thank you for taking the time to address my concerns with encouragement.
