nostr will have the best tech and the most devs, people won’t be able to ignore that for long. other clients on other protocols will run into heavy handed moderation issues due to centralization of power, government pressure, and lack of user keys. This is the main risk I see for mastodon, bluesky and big tech, regardless of current user numbers.

As long as people care about freedom and building a sovereign presence in cyberspace, nostr is inevitable.

It’s possible most people don’t actually care about these things, but at least we’ll have the best solution for people who do. Those people are the coolest to hang out with anyways.

the fact that so many people are fine with that is still an open anthropological and psychological question I have yet to understand.

They just don’t know or think about it.

People turn on autopilot for things that don’t immediately affect their livelihood. Easier to follow the herd without thinking. “Oh it’s decentralized? Awesome!”

ah right… I am blessed (cursed?) with the knowledge about how all this works at every layer of the stack, and think deeply about how implementations of these protocols lead to different outcomes. I see nostr as the outcome that leads to the most freedom for individuals, perhaps thats why its clearer to me as to why this is the proper solution. education is the key i guess.

Some see it as a blessing, others as a curse.

Thing is most people run everything through a subconscious "How does this affect my food supply?" filter. Someone in 1950s America might be mortified if a nude photo of them was passed around the office, whereas someone from some remote tribe somewhere would have no issue with everyone in their world having seen them naked. Why is one mortified and one not? Because to be exposed in the first instance is to be socially looked down upon, and our brands are hard-wired to interpret being socially looked down upon as a risk of diminished food supply (red alert). Other words, all comes down to food.

do you have a mental model of how to do we deal with reply spam and targeted harassment from evil people?

“As long as people care about freedom and building a sovereign presence in cyberspace…”

It blows my mind the degree to which people don't care about those things. There's a certain crowd that wants heavy-handed moderation and always will. Fine.

There's also a lot of people that claim they want freedom, and then can't even be bothered to crosspost. Liberty twitter sleeping on nostr is insane.

100%

Obviously want it to grow but it’s home regardless.

This protocol + your client has led to meeting some truly wonderful people and experiences.

To nostr endless growth 🤙

I predict most users of NOSTR won’t even know they are using it in the future. It will just be the protocol that underpins their favorite app.

Agreed. Reddit will just adopt Nostr. That would be incredible. :)

I mean…it will still be Reddit so incredible might be a bit of a strong word. 🤣 but yes Nostr would make it better.

💜 true! 💜

Bluesky is gay

Yup, I say it when it comes up, corporate, centralized tools inevitably die, they have quarterly goals and on boarding metrics and all that they have to give to investors. Something like Nostr (or bitcoin or anything open source and decentralized really) can continue on indefinitely with 2 users. They'll stick around as long as someone spmewhere needs them, and if not that many people do, fine, but if the time comes when many do, they're there. They only die when they become useless, success metrics have very little bearing.

Bitorrent protocol isn't used much by the masses, but it has been around a very long time now, (in computer years) and contuniues to be used more and more. An amazing protocol that hasn't died and will likely live longer than facebook or twitter because it does things no other protocol does. Nostr I think will be the same. Growth is not a metric of its usefulness, not many people use soldering irons but without them the world would be very differnt..

Exactly

I don't even solder but without soldering irons I wouldn't know a 3.5mm connector can handle 30 watts

you nailed it!

Just be ready for the censors to eventually arrive... they will show up and point out all the "hate speech" that needs to be eliminated. Fuck 'em. FREEDOM... OF SPEECH. LFG!

Nostr, an eternal joke. Keys with no possibility of rotation in case of compromise. Zero usability. Zero inclusion. Only fascist users, hostile to the LGBTQ+ community and progressives in general.

Decentralization is important, but it is not everything. 🤣

nostr’s main strength is simplicity and decentralization, anyone can use it, they just need to choose to. A protocol is not political.

That's not true. I saw your note being hostile towards LGBT people. On Bluesky I feel welcome, not here. Decentralization is not everything! Besides, what's the point of decentralization if there's no usability? To post a simple image, for example, you first need to host it on a server lol

Ask a regular user if they really think Nostr is simple?

Would your grandparents be able to use Nostr today? Be honest? Because my grandparents just created accounts on Bluesky. ;-)

You need to host your image on a server no matter the platform you use???

Lmao what

And if you wanna post an image on Damus you just select the image, just like any other platform…

You can feel unwelcomed anywhere. The point is if can you stay or not. And you can stay here.

This is a metaphor to life basically.

Don't search for niceness, search for true freedom. Which in the end is the true stability. Learn to be comfortable in chaos and you'll find your true self, instead of what other people told you that you are or need to be.

Experiences are individualized. There are people, like you, who deal well with hostility/chaos. Others, for example, will have their mental health compromised.

Do not generalize experiences. They are individual and each person knows the pain they can endure.

Depends on what level we're referring to. Experiences are individualized AND common to everyone.

Buddhism teaches this and modern psychology is reaching the same conclusion.

Basically it's pretty clear by now that certain things make us feel better than others, regardless of who or what stage of life we're in.

In other words, believing that your experience is only yours is perhaps the greatest enemy and the path to misery, and the current state of the culture in our society. That's basically what the Buddhist call attachment. We attach to identities, ideas, of us, others, etc. This is the root of all suffering. And then there's patterns of attachment that are worse than others.

You can change if you understand, visualize and make a plan. I suggest Buddhism to everyone, it's truly an incredible philosophy.

should probably avoid using the English language then too. That protocol has all kinds of racist and +-phobic words in it.

I am not technical enough to comment about key rotation.

But only fascist users, hostile to LGBTQ+ and progressives - I am not so sure this is completely true.

Like all social media, what you see is influenced by who you follow. But it's an open protocol and you are welcome to be the change you wish to see and bring more of progressive friends if you so wish to. No one can dictate how you do Nostr - do it your way 👍

lol stop being a chicken shit and block / moderate (w/ your own) account (isnt that what yall always do on other protocols) too weak to be hostile back to the haters?. bring your community here and post anything you like, youll never be banned unlike on bsky

i won't get banned, but I get threatened by haters every day here, unlike bluesky.

sorry to hear that ser, good luck at bsky

You're more than welcome on my side and I'm 100% sure by the majority of Nostr users.

I think it's fundamental to have a diversity of opinions and I personally don't like to spend time in echo chambers.

So yeah, keep posting. You're valuable and listened! Bring your friends too.

You're not going to banned here, so you'll have time to find the middle ground. That's what really really matters.

I think that we'll all get that having time and a place to find the middle ground is the most important thing, not having everyone think the same.

There's always a middle ground. :)

you can be gay just don't be an obnoxious fag about it and expect people to like that. I'm gay. there does that make you feel better?

Just the fact that you use the pejorative term "fag" tells me that you are not really gay, but rather a liar. Is demanding respect "obnoxious"? LOL

no really

That doesn't prove anything. Your words do. Even that picture of yours proves that you have no respect for others (there are children in Nostr, possibly). So why would you have any respect for me or the very community you claim to belong to?

listen if you're really too lazy to use the block button yourself then why don't you delete your nostr keys and go to bluesky? they take care of everything for you. and don't forget to tell all the little friends you make about that fascist with a dildo who thought your acronym was stupid.

Wow, a far-right gay. Only here on Nostr do we see this. LOL

Block!

what the fuck does far right even mean? fuck you

KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

+1 ⚡️⚡️

🎯💯

YES BRO ⚡ MUCH LOVE ⚡

Exactly.

And the thing is, people are looking for echo chambers when what they should be looking for is civil discourse. In other words, learning how to deal with people that have opposing views.

Twitter right now is for right wing in general

Bluesky becomes left-wing in general (I know these are very hard to define things, I'm just giving a rough perspective)

Nostr ideally becomes a mix of everyone.

For example myself I'm post left-right, I believe in the Swiss model of referendums, i.e the best tool for the job AND still having principles/morals of course.

Nostr will elevate every single individual, instead of dividing them in groups.

Call me weird but I actually like nostr already and I'm not holding my breath for it to change into something else 🤷

“Build it and they will come.”

It’s nice to see the demand is there..

To be honest, I don’t think most people care about freedom, moderation issues, privacy, etc. Maybe one day there will be a tipping point, but most normies are still happily using Gmail, Chrome, Tik Tok, etc.

It doesn't matter whether other people care about freedom, moderation issues, etc, because the world follows the path of the people who do.

But the truth is, most people do care about freedom.

nostr:note1fj0fjkg87e3gltzg2qwyt5suxxhuak9ytprc5p8md434vunych5qpk0qe4

that is a pretty big “as long as” 😅

indeed 😅
