Those that don't like AI assisted development are just gatekeepers in a long line of gatekeeping insults.

"You use an IDE? Real programmers use vim."

"You use a framework? Real programmers write everything from scratch."

"You use Stack Overflow? Real programmers read documentation."

"You use AI? Real programmers write their own code."

Keep building.

I think workflow optimization is key.

You have only 1 fixed asset, which is time. Your goal is to maximize fun, with the available resource. (Probably)

So if **nyan cat** helps you optimize your workflows to have more fun, do it. Rest does not matter.

I'd like to see the nyan cat workflow documentation 🤓

Tell me this does not help your workflow:

Gatekeepers to inefficiency! F em.

Always be shipping!

real programmers write their own code

real physicists learn physics

embroidery by hand is a skill

there is a difference

It's not a matter of using tools; it's a matter of can you comprehend and continue if you don't have access to them.

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Matthew 7:24-27

Prepper developer crossover

IDEs have been mind blowing for me

As a developer I’m slowly ramping up my use of AI for development. At this point my concern is mostly that AI is making me lazy.

It is making you lazy, that's no joke. Asking someone else to do everything or tell you exactly how to do it without putting in the practice, does not benefit neuroplasticity

I guess that works different on everyone. I let the ai do the hard work, but still check the code it generates and learn from it. Definitely I am way more efficient and effective using ai, and also more knowledgeable.

If you already have some knowledge prior to AI, theres a bias to account for.

https://arxiv.org/abs/2506.08872

And no im just just wasting bandwidth. There is correlations to suggest it has a negative impact on the ability to think.

That's arguable. I still can make complicated arithmetics on a piece of paper but I'd rather use a calculator or an excel sheet and derive the spare energy to reach further.

I learned to fly following a vor beacon but I'd rather use the gps navigator and dedicate the spare time to better attend coms.

I keep my brain busy, it is just focused on higher level tasks that improve the overall experience.

AI is a tool, a very powerful one.

How to make use of it depends solely on you.

Again that's the bias, you have the previous knowledge. It can rust, but its doesn't as much to maintain it.

The same can't be said for someone who is still learning or doesn't have that knowledge ingrained yet.

Ok, we can partially agree on that. Taking shortcuts is not a good way to learn anything. That's the only downside if it.

But just consider that most of those people who are now able to code, or do anything else, relying on AI, would have not even dare to approach those matters without it. They just get a job done that previously they could not. They were not interested in learning about that before, so they are not missing thinking abilities, and conversely they are acquiring new skills.

When I use AI for coding. I might ask for implementations or snippet examples, but i end up writing my own.

perhaps not lazy, more efficient with your time?

Here’s an example of what I mean. Call it what you want. The feeling I experienced is laziness.

I’ll run into an error or bug when testing app. I don’t want to read the logs or error message because I know the AI agent can for me. I just want to copy and paste the entire log with a description of the issue to the AI agent to tell me what is wrong and how to fix instead of just reading the log, identifying the specific relevant error messages and troubleshooting with AI in a more targeted (less tokens) route.

So it's just saved you a bunch of time that you can use to do different things? Whether it's made you lazy or not depend on if you're using that extra time productively or not.

I have the same concern 🫂

Had to use vim once absolutely hate it

WHAT?!

I LIVE IN VIM ALMOST ALL DAY LONG!

VIM BROTHERS.

RISE UP.

vim > nano

I used nano like 20 years ago and said fuck that and never used it again 🤣

I finally found our polar opposite take! It's probably been close to 20 years since I used vim 🤭

And thus begins our relationship divide.

apt purge nano

vim all the things!!!

a man of culture.

:q

I feel you on everything but vim. Why you gotta hate on the GOAT

oh no, i use vim all day long brother!

:wq

Good luck trying to convince Mastodon about that. nostr:nprofile1qqspsxwjy4edm65k53xplljqqn88hurqyzmtkgsfcseteq35zkz2exg22ftyy knows that all too well, sadly.

I'm now building entire complex apps without writing a single line of code in a language I've never used for a device I've never written for. There's been such a big change in just 6 months that I don't really see software engineering existing soon.

Why not all of them? My Stack Overflow trained AI helps me build right from within Neovim. It's tricked out with more functionality than what you'll find in most IDE's.

using all of them is most likely the correct way forward.

Absolutely.

It’s a machine. It does probably everything better than you. You wouldn’t fight a car.

Most of software development is crazy stupid work. Maintaining it is even worse.

Let the computer take care of it. It will be so obvious.

Until vibe coding actually works it just feels like a waste of time and money.

With almost not coding experience of your own you can copy and paste other people's code just like the ai does.

None of the code the AI writes is original, it's literally just copy pasting other people's code.
