Thinking about fucking around with Android, mostly because I want to try Amethyst, but also GrapheneOS. There’s a decent deal on a Pixel 6 right now ($340, early Black Friday). I don’t really want to spend much more than that since I’m just testing the waters, but is that model too old? Also, best guides for setting up and using Graphene? nostr:npub1lrnvvs6z78s9yjqxxr38uyqkmn34lsaxznnqgd877j4z2qej3j5s09qnw5 do yourself a favor and mute this thread

Lmao 😂 I’m not anti-Android. In fact I have an Android phone as a secondary device and have used them since about 2008 🤷‍♂️ Welcome to the “intelligent enough to use both” club 😎

Noooo you have to be toxically tribal, pick a side, and never change!!! /s

😁💜

😂 Wow! Didn’t realize I was joining an exclusive club! nostr:npub18ams6ewn5aj2n3wt2qawzglx9mr4nzksxhvrdc4gzrecw7n5tvjqctp424 was showing off Amethyst to me at the bar on Friday and I was impressed. Figured I should give it a try.

These are cute and so sweet girls!

Did you clear this with the wife?

Two phones opened for Nostr….

😅

Get the cheapest possible pixel that can run the OS and test it out. If you like it get a pixel with a longer shelf life. Consider how much it makes sense for you buy a phone with discontinued support in a year or two.

For the love of all things holy, buy the phone with cash or maybe something like a pseudonym, privacy.com, and an address not linked to your identity

Think just looking it up it days the pixel 6 is supported and is recommended too. I was thinking of going with a pixel too. Just trying out the feature phone market before defaulting back to a smart phone.

Do I get a badge now?

I think I gave you one yesterday because I found another note where I replied with this GIF 😂

Pixel 6 is two years old now. That seems expensive, IMO.

I’ll keep looking. I guess to be a true securitoor I should probably get it anon with cash

look for a used pixel if youre not trying to spend much

facebook marketplace for a used pixel

Avoid using tyrannical Facebook.

https://swappa.com is a better place to get used cell phones.

Pixel 6 works well with Graphene. I would get a used one off of Backmarket or Swappa. I got mine for like $200 back in May. Should be cheaper now.

I don’t get the meme. All those are good basic steps for anyone just starting off (/s) 🤪

I just followed the official tutorial. My only issues were resolved by trying different browser and OS combos. Apparently there’s a way to do it using another Graphene phone.

According to their FAQ, the 6 will have updates until October 2026. As long as the current specs are acceptable to you, That’s a pretty good period to try it out and see if it’s right for you to upgrade to a newer one.

Pixel 6a is a great phone with Graphene installed.

I've heard it's a bit of a dog running stock Android, although I've never tried.

I picked up mine second hand with cash. So many normies get them & are less than impressed.

Once the app optimisation completes after an update, which does take ages, GOS runs buttery smooth on the 6a

That model is totally not too old. Stripped of spyware and adware, it'll fly!

I haven't installed GrapheneOS, but if its anything like Replicant / Cyanogen / LineageOS, you'll need a selection of cables, the forums open on another device, and an evening's supply of patience.

And some fellow Nostr plebs to ask questions to, no doubt. Thanks!

My Pixel 6 Pro is fast. You might want to consider a 6 Pro. They don't cost much more for bunch of nice upgrades.

Nice! I really want to test out amethyst, but who knows… maybe I’ll move over

I think the 6 series still has at least 3 years of maintenance from Google, and probably even longer from Graphene.

The 8 series comes with some very substantial memory hardening security improvements, though it's a lot more expensive.

Going cheap because I want to test it out, if I have a good experience then I’ll get something higher end. Just don’t want to go to budget and effect the experience

I've been running GrapheneOS on a Pixel 6 for well over a year with few issues. i DO use sandboxed google play services and all apps i've needed so far work perfectly fine.

I found the official installation manual to be very clear, especially if you're somewhat tech-savvy. The only thing that was less obvious at the time was installing the Sandboxed play services but i believe they have since made this easier.

I upgraded to a pixel 7 recently, ONLY because of the camera, unless you have specific demanding apps you want to use wouldn't worry about performance, it was very fast for all daily tasks.

Hope this helps

Yes thanks, that was helpful! I’ll probably go with the cheaper option if it works. Really just want to mess with GrapheneOS, try out some Nostr apps and other FOSS. I’m sure I’ll be asking Nostr for more help. Thanks again 🤙

Ok newb question, but everyone I need to text with is on SMS standard protocol apps, and Signal stopped supporting those, so is it possible to get texts from work/friends/family on a Graphene OS text app?

Great question, and I had a similar one… I was also wondering how GrapheneOS users get non-KYC cellular data? Is that possible?

#asknostr

You can use https://silent.link/ and pay with sats

Go the shop with cash and buy a pay as you go sim. Top up by buying vouchers with cash 🤙

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "cellular data." Do you mean a data plan that isn't attached to you? If so the data plan comes with a SIM. Maybe Purisms "AweSIM" would do trick.

Yes, I mean 5g data and voice. I’ll check that out thanks

I use QKSMS from the F-Droid App Store.
