Yesterday there was an important discussion about monetization and the business model for clients like Damus. What do you think? Is value for value not sustainable? Will subscription models hamper the adoption of a nascent network? Give us your thoughts below 👇

Free speech should not be hidden behind a paywall IMO

I think the discussion was always around a voluntary subscription option, which still makes it “value for value” and keeps it free for new Nostriches joining nostr, but allows those of us who find so much value in Damus (or other clients) to consistently give value back.

True… but to play devil’s advocate, Twitter Blue is also voluntary. And many of us left Twitter when it was instituted (obviously amongst many other reasons). Should we as a community push to get out of that fiat mindset and try to adopt value for value? Are there other ways of incentivizing V4v?

I share these thoughts.

I love the idea of prisms. Also, a client. could create a system that reminds you to give to clients, devs, relays, and accounts that provide value.

“Here are the accounts you interact with the most and relays you’ve been using. Do you want to shoot them a ⚡️ to encourage them to keep creating?”

After all, users can move from one client to another, but as long as the Nostr ecosystem grows, everyone can benefit from the network effect.

As one of the two asking the question, that was absolutely the point of the discussion. Optional. A monthly reminder to pay an invoice for whatever amount the payer desires. End at any time, or change the amount.

The point is a bridge to provide support to the client developers to continue to focus on their work without another fiat job.

We will eventually figure out how the efforts to support the ecosystem can cover costs and make a living for their value. Clients, relays, storage services (imagines, video) etc. We need to get there.

i'd pay for Amethyst too fwiw

I want to see the option for people to SUBSCRIBE to my naughty naked content to shield the fragile eyes out there that just want to shop with me.

To keep apps on the Google Play store, it only costs a one-time fee of less than $50. The worst it gets is $100 a year to keep apps on the apple store, last time I checked.

Client builders aren't starving. The people maintaining relays are the people doing the heavy lifting. Feel free to try and change my mind if you disagree.

Damus, Twittstr...

But it may be all for the Apple tax.

This is the origin of all evil

Voluntary subscriptions or splitting zaps both seem good revenue models to start with. But consider the current userbase has a better understanding of the importance of nostr compared to the average Joe. Userbase composition will change a lot with adoption. It's important to keep measuring user sentiment for feedback-iteration cycle over time.

no subscriptions, unless it's for pro features. voluntary percentage of zaps received for non-pro features seems much more in alignment with the open source decentralized free speech protocol we all know and love 🤙🏻💜

Not sure about the subscription model. My preference is to pay up front, with a declining balance model for usage. Burned too many times on auto-renew on subscriptions that have my fiat numbers.
