Not much difference
Better, they're real.
Worse, they can actually cause material change.

I learned this one first hand. Ai wins over human NPCs imo

I kinda think we’re all NPCs in some domain. I certainly am an NPC when it comes to most things NPCs would refer to as “work.” But I can buck a bale of hay and dig a trench, and anyone who wants to help out is better to me than an AI. I’ll bro down with more humans one-on-one than not.
Worse. People are people, ai is ai, I'd rather meet a machine without personality that a person without personality (which is the kind of person I call an NPC)

As you can see by the scam bots , I would rather take my chances against actual human stupidity instead of the artificial kind .
Human NPCs can make decisions.
But at this point, we make the decision. AI does not.

Better, you can call them out, call out AI and you'll be stuck in an eternal loop.
Worse. Because I can't have an authentic conversation with an NPC, even though I should be able to have one with a person.
