Frens what are you using as digital media players (that hook up to a tv) to watch shows and movies?

Freedom tech or surveillance-less options?

Sadly, the best set top box is the Apple TV

A lot of the Android powered ones are incredibly sketchy and likely more backdoored and/or implanted with spyware than tvOS

I know quite a few people who’s only apple product they own is the AppleTV for this reason

Ugh...I'd rather plug my computer via HDMI in that case

Sadly, amazon firestick is pretty easy to sideload with vpn, file explorers, media players, etc

Jellyfin on my Rokus that connect to my Jellyfin server

Nice I have the app on zapstore

Not yet. They seem to be the top choices

i stopped using a tv a long time ago. but i used to use kodi on a raspberry pi.

I recently stopped altogether. Last week I cancelled my Netflix and Prime subs. I was on Netflix from the beginning.

These days I would rather (in random order) go for a walk, paint, draw, write, cook, clean the house, read, play a game with friends online or watch a game stream live.

We have a ton of movies and tv on disc here. I'm planning to rip most of it and slap it on whichever Linux based solution I decide on.

Firestick and a chromecast; with a pihole configured to stop all the phoning home nonsense.

Jellyfin on my Rpi 4b. It works smooth! Also further Jellyfin on my Debian/Linux. Both (Rpi and Debian) working with Tailscale/Mullvad VPN.

And for content have you used usenet?

I have a mini PC hooked up to my TV that I use as media player and home server.

The home server runs Jellyfin to collect my media. Then I have Sonar, AutoBRR and qBittorrent to download them.

Using Kodi on an rpi5. Its not perfect, but it works.

The libreelec OS for kodi supports configuring VPN directly on the OS. Avoid the add on VPN option, it was very unstable.

However, I found the Youtube Addon just didnt work with VPN configured AND jellyfin, setup through an nginx proxy did this annoying bug where it would stop playback upon resume. Having an infant means you'll pause and resume circa 37 times during a 10 minute clip, so pretty frkn annoying.

Anyway, my wife doesnt believe me, but I love it.

Oh, and I use a full mini keyboard from Rii as a remote controller, as I'd probably off myself if I had to use the tv remote.

Dont get the one with the red buttons at the top, because then you have to be VERY CAREFUL not to accidently touch them if you want to move the damn thing, or they'll fuck up your playback πŸ˜‚

Whew, lots of frustration got out with this half guide half vent..

HP prodesk micro G2 running Linux and https://webtorrent.io/desktop/

1. Older laptop

2. qBittorrent w/ built in search

3. VLC

4. HDMI cable to any tv

5. Wireless mouse & keyboard

Arrived a this setup after too many years of data hoarding and running home media servers. I spent more time collecting, organizing, and maintaining than it was worth.

Now I download a thing, watch it, delete it after seeding to 2x ratio. Life is so much better without massive banks of multiple hard drives.

Jellyfin running on a server and native Jellyfin app installed on the TV. Experience like Netflix for your library of movies...
