It's amazing to imagine the ability to listen to everyone around the world without barriers.
This is a truly unique experience, unlike other SM that tend to create isolated bubbles. We're doing something very special here.
Does this require a paid service? I wanted to post to try DeepL but they don’t accept btc or ⚡️

There’s a free plan that has a quota that works well enough for me but requires a credit card (unfortunately) to verify uniqueness and prevent people from creating more than one API key. Doesn’t accept Bitcoin.
Any plans to accept it in the future?
This implementation will bring aboard more users from different corners..

Although a fictional Babel fish caused chaos, in reality, language barriers can lead to conflict. Translation tech can help break down those barriers and promote understanding.
Human collaboration throughout history has been one of the biggest reasons why we are here today.
This time we just have to learn fast.

I’m totally biased because I worked on the feature and I’m a localization nerd, but auto translations are so dope in the new Damus release. Going to start following more non-English speakers on nostr now. Global conversations unlocked.

If someone wanted to add an alternative to deepL and libre translate, is that as easy as submitting a pull request?
Depends on which service, but generally, yes. Or ask me and I’ll see if I can add it. In my opinion, keeping it to two options seemed good enough. One is an open source option (but with poor translation quality), and the other is proprietary (but is the best translation service available).
it’d be great to have a non-KYC option. I understand not wanting to clutter it, also it would be nice if people could change that easily, just like they change relays. Perhaps could move to a standard that’s simply a url and an api key, and the user can change it within the app?
There’s no standard translation API that is shared across service providers. The only non-KYC option available is LibreTranslate as far as I can tell and that is configurable to any URL.
