Websockets are everywhere this week. In addition to the work on nostr.wine, I spent most of today optimizing a push pattern integration that I like to use for distributed and highly available ML models (or really any high compute and/or long running task), which relies heavily on websockets, queues, and pub/sub. One of those ā€œwhen it rains, it pours thingsā€, but in a good way. Keeps my mind spinning on enhancements we can add to the filter. But now I need to find a good book to read before bed, or I’ll be dreaming about data movement all night.

Anyone have any tried and true ways to get their brains to stop at the end of the day?

Which type of book are you looking for? Are you into sci-fi?

I read pretty much any fiction. I do have a soft spot for fantasy that’s based in folklore (love how much is in common across vastly different cultures when you get down to the archetypes in folklore). But sci-fi definitely makes the list. Have a good rec?

Same! It’s usually a physical manifestation of the problem.. maybe a maze and I’m walking loops and trying to get to the end quicker. Do you ever wake up exhausted from it though?

Yes they are very loopy dreams and far from restful.

Or I go for a short walk (5-10 mins) just roll along, dont go fast. and dont think about anything

and then come home, and odds are i'm ready to go to bed :D

a big problem us nerdy types have is too much blue light exposure (i never had this problem when we all had CRT's..)

so the reset to plain paper helps alot.

sometimes i'll write, as well.

am about to actually spend some time writing with a glass fountain pen, to aide in this very process.

These are great suggestions! And I totally agree about getting pen to paper. And the walking. Something about coming back into the physical space is helpful.

Great advice! I always feel better when I meditate. But my brain definitely fights the stillness

I just acknowledge that they're something in my mind and just let them be. Eventually they disappear.

Yep, books, but the book has to be good enough or I will zone out and keep thinking about whatever problem solving thing. Sometimes a podcast. If you haven't read "Fall; or Dodge in Hell" by Neal Stephenson, that's a good one. It's got some cool concepts about identity and AI that are really fun to think about.

Doing a guided bodyscan right before sleep at least helps me to not ā€˜go over the day’. Tightening muscles and letting go is also very effective.
