You don’t have the use the vendor’s wallet app like Ledger Live for example. You can use Sparrow for that.

Download sparrow wallet on your PC, it will work with your ledger or trezor hardware wallets

It uses the same "account" (xpub) - so balances will be the same on both
If you're happy with your setup no need to change anything, sounds like you do other crypto stuff, sparrow is Bitcoin only so might make things worse for you

Honestly though, if the ledger was your first real hardware wallet, and it’s your primary driver, just use it with the ledger live app.
I personally would only make the move to sparrow wallet on desktop when I had a proper coldcard mk4 or coldcard Q.
Use the ledger with the app that’s built for it until you’re in true tin foil hat mode, and then get a coldcard with sparrow on desktop.
Ledger added a feature to backup keys and lost some trust bc apparently they could potentially access them.
I'm wary of both companies not being able to be sufficiently airgapped. An xpub should not be considered any more public than a bank statement as it ties your utxo's together and makes you easily surveilled.
Firmware updates? Are updates required/ recommended to the HWW via the trash apps?
Unless a critical vulnerability needs to be patched or something stops working, no need to update firmware

Never create any account or transact using their apps because they will most likely leak your xpub + ip and other metadata.
As hardware devices they are really good.
