Many think this is 1.
That's because the equation uses shorthand multiplication in the second half, so folks wrongly think that 8/2(2+2) is equivalent to 8/(2*(2+2)), or as a fraction:
8
------------ = 1
2 * (2+2)
The reality, as Aunt Sally will have you know, is that the equation is really 8/2*(2+2), or:

Multiplication and division are in the same priority group, so one must first solve for parentheses, (2+2), then flatten the equation and resolve it as 8/2*4, where 8/2=4*4=16.
