Spent the morning browsing FOSS games. There aren't many recent ones, and they're generally much lower quality. Still, Y2K was the golden age of gaming, so the bar is not that high technically speaking.

Creating "retro games" is where it's at. There are many new games that community develops for Gameboy, NES, Amiga and there are things like pico8...

Jon is really gonna do it now 😂 wen coracle games

i'm a huge fan of feral interactive and unity tho... they have held a beachhead that lets you play stuff that uses and needs modern hardware

it's unbelievable how hard it is to get recent AMD GPUs to work on linux these days though, in case you were interested, zorin is one that is running an RX 7800 XT beautifully out of the box... only downside is the installer puts on a metapackage for the kernel and if it's connected even if you uncheck update while installing it b0rks the system by upgrading to a 6.5 kernel that doesn't support this video card

it's been driving me absolutely bonkers this last week

OpenTTD is pretty cool if one likes slow Sim City like builder, and train logistics. Very nerdy but a serious game.

Fun fact - back in the day I did graphics for OpenTTD. Especially things like icons... each pixel was selected manually in the yellow cursor 😁

Super cool! Thank you for your service! Although it isn't a game for everyone, due to complexity, I always found it to be a particularly beautifully crafted game :)

As an ex-maintainer of globulation2 I strongly agree. FOSS gaming is in a desolate state. On a standard distro you find bzflag, tuxRacer, abuse, zaz, mahjongg and maybe nexuiz and cube and some titles like Spring require you to legally own old closed source games to play all the content ... hmm ... but Spring appears to still be active. I'm curious now to try it out. I think it used to be playable only with an original Total Annihilation license. Now there appear to also be completely open mods.

StarCraft is from 1998.

Exactly!

Have you played Barotrauma? It's not free, but it is open source! And it's a ton of fun to play with a group of friends.

Xonotic is pretty good.

Did you find any good racing games? I liked the Trackmania series before the free/libre switch.

I haven't, that's the first thing I want to find
