Contemplating the shift away from Alby custodial service as it approaches.... there's so many ways to spend money on nostr now 😂
Discussion
When are they shutting down the custodial? I know it’s coming but haven’t seen a date or timeframe yet
I haven't seen anything specific yet either but I figure I better start trying stuff.
The sending side of things is fairly easy to replace. It’s receiving that can get complicated once you go self-custodial.
Yep, and I don't know if I want to do that for zaps. If i was attempting to earn, i would, but anything i recieve just stretches my monthly budget. I've been using minibits off nostr for a while & i really like it. There's so many cashu things to explore... But self-custody is king. Life's hard. 😂
Have you tried CoinOS wallet? It’s been around a while as a web based lightning wallet and they just got zaps working for receiving on nostr. Self custody is king, but for receiving such small amounts it is a bit much to run your own setup just for that.
Here's my obligatory shill for nostr:nprofile1qqs9df4h2deu3aae83fmet5xmrlm4w5l9gdnsy3q2n7dklem7ezmwfcpz3mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduq5xamn8ghj7dnvv45xs7tywde8g6rpvakkjuekw46nvar4vdhxgan6wumkxatzwpckk6rk0puhjdm2da5k7ce5x4kkkumjx3jkzepwdahxjmmwqyt8wumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnwdaehgu3wd9hxvmckqw0xz and nostr:nprofile1qqsrf5h4ya83jk8u6t9jgc76h6kalz3plp9vusjpm2ygqgalqhxgp9gpr3mhxue69uhkummnw3ezumt4w35ku7thv9kxcet59e3k7mgpzemhxue69uhkkmr0vd4k2mn8vyh8xmmrd9skcqguwaehxw309ahx7um5wghxy6t5vdhkjmn9wgh8xmmrd9skctylktc. We're running really smooth and stable on it lately. Zaps and the stuff that needs a lightning address come into nostr:nprofile1qqstxwlea9ah3u6kjjszu6a7lrnhqkfh8eptp2z6v0e9558tlkkl2rgpzemhxue69uhk2er9dchxummnw3ezumrpdejz7qgwwaehxw309ahx7uewd3hkctcpremhxue69uhkummnw3ez6ur4vgh8wetvd3hhyer9wghxuet59u4kl3vp and get dumped to the node occasionally.
i use their hosted hub service
it's no different to hiring a VPS and running it on it myself, ultimately
spending and issuing invoices requires a signature that i hold the key to here locally on my pc
keeping stuff connected to the internet can be a big hassle when you have shitty domestic consumer grade internet, so, it's something to think about
i have a pc that could run a lightning server perfectly well but keeping it online is a lot of effort and pain when something goes wrong, power goes out, internet goes down, router downstairs crashes... the cost of having that level of reliability, better than 80%, goes up fast for each extra bit of reliability you chase after, and that 20% downtime amounts to zaps you can't receive
idk, it's not that important for just zaps anyway, i run LN node now so i have my sats ready to go regardless of what degenerate bullshit the ordinals brigade gets up to, like today's epic 7 blocks of mental retardation
I was debating on that but I already spend a fair bit on various services. I can't really increase my spending without justifying it. Lol
My home internet is stable but I hardly use it. My lightning node just kind of hangs out, waiting for me to get over my grudges. But that also requires time for me to be home, and sitting still.
well, setting up the alby cost tme 21k sats, more or less, so it's not that expensive
not trying to shill for them here but they have been really solid through the time i've been on nostr, so they have earned my respect
i still have a WoS account on my phone that i use to bounce sats around to my channels - alby hub is kinda dumbed down but i'm finding it pretty reliable for the most part and it's nice now that xapo enabled inbound LN i can just keep my spendings in alby hub and only zap them out literally just before i go to the shop to spend the sats on the card, and use it directly via the extension to pay my bitrefill to do amazon and other things
You're right. Alone it's not expensive, but that doesn't change my budget.
I use Alby Hub on my nostr:npub126ntw5mnermmj0znhjhgdk8lh2af72sm8qfzq48umdlnhaj9kuns3le9ll and it works very well. All the Alby features (and more) and all of the benefits of self-custody.
I moved all my alby to zeus native node and use wos here for top ups
