I agree with everything you’re saying about this stuff as a newbie who is losing interest in this place and I only keep coming back at this point because it feels like a puzzle I can’t crack. And I don’t like that. So I’ve been trying to crack it. But I leave frustrated and exhausted most times.

Weeks ago I also felt tired by the echo-chamber phenomenon. But I somehow managed to get around the issue and found the right balance in my followed list between BTC addicts and just random nice and friendly people talking about anything and everything.
And the very fact that this topic is now very hot is a proof that things are evolving and that Nostr is slowly becoming something more than just a Bitcoin-only social network.
I think it's good that we still have both visions for now, Nostr wouldn't be what we know without the Bitcoin community fighting for it and Lightning making it explode.
But it seems like we're going somewhere else now, gradually... Then suddenly? 😉

I’m super curious about what is going well and not well nocoiner or non-bitcoiner experience on Nostr. Maybe it’s just nascent and needs more non-BTC content still? It sounds like there’s a significant group among your connections though!

So what are they finding out? Are you basically saying the global feed is too bitcoin-oriented? I don’t use it at all, rather I find people interested in what I am, and I follow who they follow. Is that not working for them?

Every account I’ve found to follow I have stumbled on through accident or by looking at who Jack follows and going through other people’s follower lists for interesting accounts. Or by seeing threads with replies from Jack.

Seems like that means nobody is saying anything followable here except for bitcoiners. I mean that’s the impression I get from my own feed, but it’s hard to believe that’s the actual ground truth.
Jack packed up a spaceship of bitcoin Twitter users and brought them here together. Maybe we just need another person with a different interest to do the same.

#[5] it is a Bitcoin echo chamber here for the most part. I actually enjoy a Bitcoin only space, as it’s better, imo, than my experience on Twitter for Bitcoin only. I like that I can chat about anything and have fun with other Bitcoiners. However most of us are nerds for Bitcoin haha so branching out and bringing other topics it’s much of a focus. Nostr is still young and clunky. That combined with us Bitcoin Maxis is likely intimidating for others.
I believe the content and experience will grow, but unlikely for a while. Like you are already doing, continue to be the change you want to see.

If you have to concentrate on money (in this case bitcoin) 24/7 it does not make it as relaxing for some who may like bitcoin but can still “like” friends comments, and socialize more.
So go follow other people who talk about things you like. People talks about video games, coffee, travel etc etc etc

I’m curious how the early days of Twitter compare? I wasn’t using Twitter then, but maybe it was also uninviting to new users because of echo chamber effects? Or maybe not? Obviously bitcoin wasn’t a thing yet…
I think nostr is still waaayy early in the adoption curve. It has the potential to take on S-curve adoption, like Bitcoin has done to some extent, but that may take time. So from that standpoint, I’m not surprised that a lot of the content centers on topics like Bitcoin and decentralized protocols.
For Bitcoiners, it can be tough to find community of people to talk stuff out with. Bitcoin Twitter is terrible, yet the mainstream media doesn’t have an educated approach to writing about Bitcoin. So I get it. At the same time, Nostr won’t reach S-curve adoption if it remains a “Bitcoin thing.” So let’s all try to stack notes about other random shit 😜

But why? Why should a bitcoiner be expected to not talk about the thing that interests them in a place with lots of other people who are also enthusiastic about it? 🤣🤣 What a ridiculous notion. Just unfollow bitcoiners, the same way you would on Twitter or any other social network. You don’t have to talk about bitcoin here. But you can’t decide what others can or cannot talk about. That’s the whole point.
We agree. I’m not saying “don’t talk about Bitcoin.” Just saying talk about more stuff. Same as you said. And I think #[6]‘s idea about a bootstrap relay list that hides bitcoin references could be a good approach for some. Relay curation in general feels like an area of huge potential for experimentation.
Also muted words would help a lot.
I’m with you, I’m just saying talk about what interests you. Be authentically yourself. If that is 100% bitcoin then so be it. If it’s 50% other stuff, or even 0% bitcoin then so be it. That will naturally result in your follow list being other people who have shared interests with your authentic self.
I have seen a few people join nostr and talk about what most here would call "shitcoins" and get flamed off of nostr as though it were sport. Not scammers per say just people interested in other than BTC. I encourage people to talk about whatever they want and not be piled on.

Yeah shitcoin was another term that was bonkers to me. It feels like a cult. If you aren’t in the in group, you’re in the out group and you better fuck off. That’s how it feels anyway.
Just replace shitcoin with scammer snake oil. That’s all it means. Lots of people have lost money in “crypto” scams and it’s our way to steer noobs away.

Then why not just call them scammers? I know there are a lot of crypto currencies out there. As a person who isn’t into all of it, they all look about as scammy as the next. So the term is off putting from the outside looking in.
I think the reason the term came into use is to shame the superfluous pilferers of every sort of coin shaped ponzie scheme. Being sceptical is a good thing for people. Being accurately informed is better.
Valuable good people here like #[9] has spoken openly on his podcast nests about being shamed about his interests in other coins. But do we hate on him? No. I for one, will not. And I really hope others don’t either. Cause he’s great person… an AMAZING friend, who I highly value, highly love, & dearly respect. Listening is a learned skill, it’s more powerful to listen then to speak sometimes.

I’d like to find other users by hashtag. When I search a hashtag in universe nothing comes up. It’s only if I click on a hashtag on a note. Im using Damus
Type the hashtag and click where it says search that hashtag right under the search bar and it will take you to a feed of posts with that hashtag 
If it’s supposed to work, maybe I’ll try troubleshooting

Yea it used to be the same with searching users and posts but that was recently changed. I vaguely remember reading that he had other ideas for hashtag searches but I can’t remember for sure. But yea, it would be cool if that at least searched as you typed it without having to click anything.
Can ya understand even slightly now corn? These are users that have been here weeks… and they “just learned this” now!!! I realize that your knowledge base seems to “exceed” all our ours, but perhaps something as simple as this … not being able to find hashtags… further demonstrates my point.

We call things by their name. If somebody acts as if it's something great or ok to buy/sell (in public space), then don't be suprized when someone objects.

There was, can be, and only ever will be one bitcoin.
Everything that came afterwards as an attempt to “improve” or somehow replace it is doomed to failure because they suffer from a fatal design flaw. They are missing at least one but usually more important aspect of bitcoin that can’t be replaced.
Those include :
- Its fair issue through proof of work
- Its lack of a company or known founder
- The fact that it survived years of attacks and emerged stronger after each one
- Its established network effects
- Its unchangeable supply and monetary policy
There are more, but that’s enough for now.
Yes, saying “Elon” or “Twitter” or many things here will shame people
to leave Nostr.
Asking people to “not talk about x” isn’t even really possible which is beautiful. I think what people are hungry for is a frictionless way to discover topics. A frictionless way to find relays that have content they want. Right now discoverability is hard. A lot of opportunity for builders.
So is it a safe assumption that if someone calls themself a bitcoin they have zero other, non-bitcoin related interests to talk about then? If that’s the case, that means a lot of people here are just sort of boring and not really worth interacting with if you don’t share their one interest, so why bother staying?
I’ve met interesting people here who talk about Bitcoin a lot as well as many who don’t. I agree it’s weird to only care about one thing. I just think it’s understandable that this early in the adoption curve, people who love the most successful decentralized money protocol would also naturally gravitate to an incredible decentralized social messaging protocol (or whatever the right term for #nostr is!)

If we started talking about the qualities of Etherium we would be bashed to oblivion on Nostr. (We don’t care about Etherium at all for the record) but I am trying to get the point across to him.. unless one wants to echo and hum bitcoin night and day, a lot of new people who are not completely orange pilled will just go away.
He is ok with people going away. Because if no growth is the best he can do, as long as the current atmosphere is the same, he doesn’t care.
