Remember when a massive influx of new #Nostr users from Android brought relays to their knees? Me neither, because it only happened when Damus hit the Apple App Store. The gloating from Android fanbois is shortsighted and completely misses the bigger picture. Mass adoption of Nostr and bitcoin won’t happen without iPhone App Store, or at least will happen much more slowly.

Oh don't say that Android still has the power

Android is fantastic. But that’s not the point here.

Android is amazing! True freedom! Love open source. 💜🧡

Great point , Android is the way to go!!!!

Yea I jumped in a bit quick it wasn't android they were discussing William pal.

I thought everyone was talking about how Amdroid is the way to go 🚶‍♂️

So did I buddy sure look oh well I always butt in to conversations don't mean to just ask about android and my mate just said yea but android wasn't the point which is cool eh.

Android is so cool!! 💜🧡

I fucking love android my TV is hooked up to an an Android box fuk them fire sticks lol I've got all my shit on Android it's definitely the bees knees my brother William 🫂💜🤜🤛

Oh ya buddy!! Android is a dream ⚡️

You really love Android William brother lol the past three notes you've been creaming for Android 🤣🤣🤣 🤜🤛💜🫂🤙

Okay sorry for been me and butting in we're I'm not wanted sorry pal 💜🫂

That was Edward Snowden 🤣

There was a bump then, but Damus App Store day was huge. The technical superiority of one mobile device platform over another isn’t the important issue here. Most of Nostr’s current users will be able to route around whatever restrictions either Apple or Google could throw at them. But without access to app stores on both platforms mass adoption will be slow af, if at all. Sideloading is not the be all end all solution.

I feel your bias is showing here brother. You want a company to bend the knee to Bitcoin and Nostr? Bitcoin and Nostr do not need Apple. The developing world and people living under oppressive regimes need freedom more than anyone else in the world. They use Android. I'm sorry but that's the truth. Apple is a great marketing company. Apple makes great hardware. It's just not for the masses of the world. They brand themselves as a luxury company with luxury devices. Not everyone can't afford them and it's pretty narrow-minded to forget about the rest of the world.

Will most likely will have a Nostr client on iOS for Apple users because it would be silly to write off those users, but all of the innovations will be developed elsewhere. Maybe in 4 years, as per Apple's track record, they'll change their mind when they can announce a way to store your Nostr private key in Apple wallet. Until then, Will and others will build for the masses and innovate for the masses.

Bitcoin and Nostr don't need Apple. In fact, the people in the world that need freedom the most do not use Apple products because they cannot afford them. They use Android.

i.e. Last year I helped raise funds for Bitcoin Ekasi in South Africa. They used the funds to buy $25 Android phones for their Bitcoin children and youth programs. They bought 30 of them. Buy 30 phones or buy 1 phone? The choice was easy.

Derek this situation isn’t Apple vs. Android. Why do you insist on making it about that?

Do you consider Alternate Operating Systems that can be freely installed on non apple phones Android?

It actually is though. You keep trying not to make it so but the fact is.

Even Vanilla Android has alternate appstores, installing direct from developer .APK files.

You can freely install alternative OSes on non ape phones.

Apple* phones

Because you do.

This is about freedom for me. This is about censorship for me.

If it’s about freedom then it is important to have Nostr and bitcoin apps in the App Store on Android AND iOS. Again, this is not so much about the current user base. Most people here can figure out workarounds if needed. I’ve used both iPhone and Android since 2008. I jailbroke and rooted every device I had through the years until a few years ago. I’m not concerned about my ability to use the apps and services I want to use. There are pros and cons to both platforms, but pretending the solution to this problem is to tell all iPhone users to use android instead is shortsighted and a nonstarter.

That's where we're at though. It may be a non-starter for you, but there are billions of people that can't afford Apple products.

The way to Apple's heart has always been through their wallet and marketshare.

Build the apps elsewhere and make the users demand it and want it.

They'll eventually cave after a few years, per their track record.

Disagree. I think switching to Android is the solution, at least short term. It's the only way to get Apple to reverse their policy. By law they're allowed to do what they're doing. Changing the law is unlikely to happen since we live in an oligarchy.

Unpopular take: Android experience isn’t as open source as they claim for most android users.

Manufacturers can opt for closed source implementations of Android.

Android core development is not community driven.

Manufacturers of android phones can (and will) void your warranty if you tinker with the OS. (Same as Apple)

It is apparently much easier to tinker with Android than iOS, Sailfish and Ubuntu touch use android code.

The real hero is Linux.

Is Android open source? Yes, it is. But most implementations are not.

Are you confusing AOSP (Android Open Source Project) with an OEM fork?

I’m referring to the “label” Android, which depending on what device you are using will have various degrees of openness. This makes the whole label “murky”. Control freaks come in two flavors, overt and covert. Many android inspired OS exist now, as a reaction to the points I have made above.

Android is open, but for most android phone users it isn’t. I don’t trust Google’s meddling with W3C. I don’t trust Google with android (especially when running on devices made by Samsung, Xiaomi,…)

I simply wish to have a third option… without control freaks trying to own me.

I'm referring to the Android Open Source Project. What someone decides to do after they download or fork the source is on them. This is why I only use devices that are open.

Sorry walking and can't see buttons. I wish we had a viable third option too. Maybe someday.

yeah, the situation is not about apple vs android, at least bc people who can’t afford apple tech is not the only one who need freedom.

however i believe his point was that

by preferring brands alternative to apple, people could encourage the company to change its policy 🤔

#Nostr doesn't need apple to succeed and this is a very US centric post. Android is much more open and available to the common person around the world.

App Store access to major mobile devices is needed. Yes even in the US

If Apple bans bitcoin wallets and Nostr clients how can mass adoption happens with iPhone people?

Apple fanboys don’t see the bigger picture that their closed source OS are taking away people’s freedom.

Late adopters convinced by economic pain 🤷🏻‍♂️

If Apple bans Bitcopin and Nostr, mass adoption is impossible - mass adoption of iPhone. People will buy the phone that works best for what they want to do.

Not everyone wants freedom, some will defend slavery and censorship with their lives, Nostr and Bitcoin isn’t for everyone.

Don’t be fooled..

Then we will fight in the Shade...

Imo your line of thinking on all this is very high time preference... Submit to a platform lockin, walled garden, gate keeper ecosystem because that's where a lot of users are already.

Sounds a lot like why bitcoin if most people use fiat still?

I'm rambling but

At what point do enough phone users realize their chosen phone platform is hostile to them, they aren't able to use nice, useful features unless they ditch that product?

That's what happened to me a few years ago, I said enough is enough and ditched iOS and then macOS shortly after.

probably because android users were already using nostr via pwa. apple users waited patiently for the app store approved app.

I see your point brother, but freedom doesn't pass through closed source proprietary OS.

iOS may be hip, cool and all, but it's not your OS, it is not your phone.

I feel for you apple fanboys, but this ain't the note.

Much love tho 💜

There may be a lot of freedom talk and stuff... but people do love their iPhones a whole lot, huh o.o (Though I was an iPhone - and macOS - user for basically a decade and a half myself, so I probably shouldnt talk lol.)

This isn't gloating. This is asking why Apple fanbois gate freedom so much they are willing to bend the knee as far as asked.

How does one choose decentralization and compliance with central authority simultaneously? I will never understand it. The signs that Apple was going to kill this came weeks ago, but even now people live a delusion.

The signs were there when they had that row with Epic.

Will happen, and slower is not necessarily worse.

On IOS there will be nostr clients without zaps, users will start to migrate to Android to fully experience nostr+bitcoin, Apple will rollback his decisions.

Free inbound marketing, plus the nostr ecosystem can placily grow and show itself in a mature form without be ddossed, not bad :)

Can APPLE run PWA's? Or does that only work on android?

Im ready to sell my iphone

Go do it. Buy a pixel and install graphene on it.

It won’t feel as nice on the outside but the benefits are privacy and sovereignty.

How much? We can pay you to set fire on it, who is in?

Start a nostr donation towards it

First Im waiting for Will to migrate Damus to another platform.

Ok… 0.1 Bitcoin to set my phone on fire and record whole thing from start to finish.

Wow, this would be enough to buy 3 pixel 7 pro...

Unfortunately, I didn't buy mine yet, but if you make a #zapraiser I promise to be there contributing with some part.

Naaah save the sats

Pixel will be mine one day

Bonfire 🔥

PWA and webapp

Not true at all. In India alone (now the most populated country in the world) there were 659 million smartphone users in 2022 (source: statista) and android market share is now 94% (source: gs.statcounter)

Sooo...much slower it is! Hahaha

Damus coming to Android!!!

Why talk like that, and call them Android fanboys? Unfollow.

Yes.

apple is the definition of a fanboy. enjoy your freedom inside the golden cage

Totally agree, but to stay in constant fear ..apple is gonna kick your app from the app store is not a good thing. Just try to put yourself in Will's skin.

I used to be a loyal iOS user.

Bitcoiners got me onto an open platform.

If nostr helps other Bitcoiners do the same, then I'm all for it.

Thanks for your opinion. Apple is going down the drain.

Absolutely -- Together WE are Strong. -- Let's get it!
