⚡️💬 NEW - Niall Ferguson says giving students under 25 unfettered access to ChatGPT will just make them dumber.

He says the damage is already done: worse than smartphones, worse than COVID, in under 2.5 years.

“This is the worst thing to happen to the human brain, aside from very dangerous drugs, in my lifetime.”

Not just young people.

its dumbing down everyone that relies on it.

Sad..

I really enjoy using ChatGPT. I get a ton of what I call value out of it. Have yet to meet a friend or colleague who is now “dumbed down” from using it.

Compare your own intellect today with yourself before you started relying on AI to think for you.

Your comment is self contradictory. You're literally telling us how AI dumbed you down but you also don't believe it can dumb people down? Wut

Hmmm. Not sure where to take this in the spirit of genuine and curious dialogue. I probably need a bit more context about your own approach to using AI as well as some background on how you have formed your current understanding. Happy to extend the conversation and explore if you are interested. Always up for a sincere dialogue if on offer. That being said, my intellect (my ability to reason and arrive at an understanding logically and abstractly) has not changed, but the time to arrive at a solution, a clarification, an opposing argument, etc has been significantly reduced. AI has not added or taken away from me any specific cognitive skill. Rather, AI has crushed down a big part of the early enquiry cycle. I find that I arrive at a potential thesis to explore sooner than I did with a Google only approach.

What exactly do you mean by dumbing people down? Do you believe that it is a universal human experience as a result of any or all use of AI? Also, what types of AI?

People in their 40s who use chatgpt seem to be going into the same cognitive decline that people normally don't experience until they're 70

Use it as a tool, writing things down was also seen as dumbing people down by the philosophers of the past

Old man tells young people to not use new technology

TV's bad for you, did you know that?

It makes your eyes square 😂

JFC always the same shit.

Old people yelling at new technology because it „seduces the youth and makes youth dumb.“

From Books to TV, internet, video games, internet and AI. They’re always yelling and they’re always wrong.

The opposite is true. Technology makes us better. Always has been.

that's obviously right but this guy is stupid so I like LLMs now

I'm just here for the very dangerous drugs if I'm honest🤷🏻‍♂️.

If you use ai to do stuff for you maybe that stuff wasn't worth doing personally in the first place?

People make music, paint, write books etc. Because it's enjoyable to express yourself creatively.

Please wake up.

You wanna live in a pod as slave with no freedom not allowed to think for yourself? That's where it's heading

My comment completely agrees with yours. I'm saying if you choose to delegate tasks to ai then it shows for the most part you didn't want to do those personally in the first place. You would rather use that time saved on something you're passionate about music write books creativity.....

So, following this logic, the wheel is to blame for the human legs limited speed, airplanes have cancelled the human wings development, and so on.

What a dumb take.

The fact that your response to well documented facts is to say some retarded shit tells us a lot about you.

Someone like this wants us to KYC the internet for our safety.

**No respect for that guy.**

"Ferguson supported the Iraq War and described himself a month after the invasion of Iraq in 2003, as ‘a fully paid-up member of the neo-imperialist gang’[140][141] and he is on record as being not necessarily opposed to future Western incursions around the world."

"Ferguson also praised Operation Warp Speed, and argued that part of the reason for the failure of the U.S. government to effectively respond to the pandemic was the absence of a similar program for COVID-19 testing.[186]"

"In wake of the 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel, Ferguson said, "I think it is clear that Israel can no longer co-exist with Hamas in control of Gaza. If anybody doubted that, then surely those doubts were dispelled on October the 7th with the most hideous scenes of violence against Jews since the Holocaust". He added that "The issue is can Hamas be destroyed, as it should be, at an acceptable cost".[188]"

"Ferguson met journalist Sue Douglas in 1987, when she was his editor at The Sunday Times. They married in 1994, and went on to have three children.[189] In February 2010, Ferguson separated from Douglas and thereafter started dating Ayaan Hirsi Ali.[190][191] Ferguson and Douglas divorced in 2011. Ferguson married Hirsi Ali on 10 September 2011;[192][193] she gave birth to their son three months later.[194][195][196] Upset about the media coverage of his relationship with Hirsi Ali, which implied that he had begun dating her before his first marriage had unraveled, Ferguson stated: "I don't care about the sex lives of celebrities, so I was a little unprepared for having my private life all over the country."[91]"

"Ferguson's self-confessed workaholism has placed strains on his personal relations in the past."
