To all those that eat "wild" meats;

How do you deal with worms or parasites?

I cook food very thoroughly

extra well done

Yeah but let's say you hunt a deer or bear, slice it open and it oozes worms.

Is it a write off?

Yeah not eating that one

Makes sense

Cooking, but also i have never seen worms in my deer meat.

Interesting, I get cooking the meat.

But you've never had worms or parasites in wild game?

Not free ranged farmed, but actually wild meats

Literally never seen it in deer. You have to get it tested for CWD in some counties, but its obvious. Also, you have to eat a bite of the heart in my neck of the woods.

Wild animals move arround a lot, when they get parasites and wormy, their likely old or sick and the coyotes take care of them real quick.

That makes sense, young and strong ones would be less prone to it.

I just thought that without antibiotics or the same treatment as farmed meat, that the animals would be full of parasites

Farmed meat can be free of worms and parasites without using dewormers too, its just more work because the human takes the role of a predator.

In nature, wolves and packs of coyotes forced bison to move frequently. Also, modern cattle genetics actually are more susceptible to parasites than their wild counterparts because the wrong traits have been selected for since 1971 (moee or less)

Don't serve medium rare bear meat.

Well cooked I get, but with worms and parasites?

lol you cook it

Worms and all?

You dont generally find adult worms in any meat. Thsts not where they live. What you can find are microscopic larval worms or cysts. Sometimes these can be seen as tiny white flecks in the meat or organs. These cysts do not survive proper cooking. I have been eating deer and other game for over 20 years and never seen worms or cyst in the meat.

That's interesting. I always assumed wild meat was full of parasites

I have heard of bear and boar having heavy loads of trichinella cysts. You cant see them, but if the meat is not well cooked you get infected. You then end up with microscopic cysts in your own muscles...

Yikes 😬

Yeah I've always been wary about bushmeat

I've never come across parasites or disease in any wild harvested meat. It's about as common as catching salmonella from raw cookie dough.
