CC is gonna regret not checking nostr often smh

Sure. Run it at 500 watts. It would be very quiet.

Don't forget to keep it hydrated.

Do you know of anywhere that sells S9’s with fans already swapped out? Don’t really want to be messing around inside power supplies changing fans out to be quieter.

lol, wtf

Braiins lets you clock it way down, so my guess would be yes? You could also use a plus sized fan. Those run at lower hertz for the same volume. It’s the high-frequency of the tiny fans that makes all the noise.

Got one coming in this month. Same as you, I'll be putting it in the basement, where I often record video calls. I'm curious as to how it'll sound.

Check this out and keep them all running.

I have some rough sound data in this post. If you have the right set up you can run it at about 700 W and it will be quiet enough for a bedroom (maybe just under 40 dB). I don’t know how quiet you need it for a podcast…

nostr:note10kwqc92xdv0ddypjez4jhqffssgk6c42nvgjxxz6anhdz0j8dkvsk99av2

Also worth mentioning you can probably get it quieter than I did if you splurge for the ac infinity fan, but I don’t have data for that

Yes it's possible but to make it whisper quiet you might need to lower your wattage while recording. Here's mine standing 3 ft away at 500 watts.

I'm using the nostr:npub1lrjgpa9m2dl6esdah5pq7m005ymwh4glq4aet76q2zlz2f83esfsa2zvrj 120mm to 140mm adapter that I printed and 2x 3000rpm noctua NF-A14 industrialPPC fans

https://v.nostr.build/WqGk.mp4

The silent fans I put on my S9K were only running at 700rpm and seemed to be causing a fault that made it stop mining. The stock fans are louder than a shop vac and I can't run them in my bedroom and maintain my sanity. They're so loud you can hear them down the stairwell outside my apartment.

I ordered some 3000 RPM Noctura fans and hoping they work with this miner. They say they're only 42 Db so that should be tolerable. Might plug the S9 into a timer so it shuts off at bedtime and comes back on when it's time for me to wake up.

I have those exact fans on several of my miners. Works great.

I have another miner with 2000 rpm fans but I can only crank that miner to 1000 watts. It sits at roughly 99 degrees and runs at full power. Need that extra spinnage to run at the max 1450 and stay cool.

Good to know! Thanks for chiming in!

I have 2 just delivered and waiting at my house. I never even thought about sounds levels. Thanks for the heads up

Just curious, but are your power/heating bills so high that it justifies at home mining? My power bill runs an average of .35 per kilowatt hour (average across the USA is .16 per kilowatt hour, so mine is double that of most) so I have my miners hosted and use a wood burning stove to heat in the winter and our evenings cool off enough in the summer months that I just open all the house windows overnight and close them in the morning and it stays nice and cool in the house all day. No need for the AC. We average 95 degrees in the summer.

That is my exact scenario šŸ«‚

I'm at .075 per kilowatt hour where I have my machines placed. Yes, I would love to mine at home in an outbuilding in a noise proof room but it makes zero sense for me.

It’s definitely more expensive to heat with electricity using miners. I had natural gas heating before, shifting to electric increases the bill a lot. But my general electricity price isn’t terrible and the sats I make more than cover the difference. After accounting for the #Bitcoin I earn im about 90% certain my cost basis is a good chunk lower than natural gas. I haven’t done the math to confirm, but I’ve been surprised at how much I’m getting in sats.

After a few months I’ll have more concrete data on everything and I’m going to do some sort of breakdown in video or a write up.

Great. Looking forward to your breakdown once you have all your data.

Immersion mining with a water to air heat exchanger

I’ve thought about it, and planned originally to start with air cooled and then go to immersion. But the miner group I’m in seems to be heavily against immersion cooling, saying it’s a much bigger mess and pain in the ass than people admit.

Curious your thoughts. Is it that much better? I had just intended to use car parts for most of it essentially and it didn’t seem very intimidating, but they definitely have gotten me to rethink whether it’s necessary.

I’ve not done it myself but seeing Schmidt’s setup was pretty impressive and absolutely whisper quiet. He’s implemented his water heater and furnace now as well.

U can run it at approx 40 db

Yes, the nostr:npub1lrjgpa9m2dl6esdah5pq7m005ymwh4glq4aet76q2zlz2f83esfsa2zvrj adapters are worth it if you plan to sit next to it. Here is my lady's #LotteryHeater - running Braiins 800w@110v & 10THs

I like the quiet background noise mine providers (nostr:npub1lrjgpa9m2dl6esdah5pq7m005ymwh4glq4aet76q2zlz2f83esfsa2zvrj version). If I were recording a podcast, I would be concerned the noise would be audible in the background.

100% I run one next to me in my office at 500w and it's totally silent and is currently keeping my office consistently warm at 21° in the depths of winter. AND my life is full of the potential to win an entire block reward at any moment šŸ¤™

dog also seems to like it

Quiet enough to sleep next to.

About 47db to be exact.

Haha I love the stand! šŸ˜‚

My wife would kill me if I tried to put this in my room though, lmao. She already puts up with enough of my endless string of projects. Her only demand is I make them look good and on purpose.

Fair demand otherwise folks walk into your house thinking you are trying to send a message through a stargate šŸ˜‚

The AC Infinity inline fans make it super quiet. Didn't you set yours up with one?

The one in the ducting is using an AC Infinity. For the space heater S9 I was looking for something more compact. Didn’t want the kinda obnoxious setup that I have for the house.

Just use heat pumps...

What’s their hash rate? 🤣

You can run it at 750W and sit next to it. Use a Temp Switch to remotely control it based on ambient temps.

Depends on how much you spend on the box...

I guess the design paper is freely available so you can build it with plywood

If it's stock then you'll want to replace the PSU fan for sure. The intake/exhaust fans can also be replaced for lower noise. I went with 140mm noctua, but I heard good things about ac infinity fans. Then you need a firmware that allows setting a target wattage. I use Braiins firmware and set it to 650 watts. End result sounds about the same as an average gaming PC.

Running mine damn quiet at 800W and a fan speed of 55%. Replaced the stock fans for the recommended Noctua 140mm fans. It's as quiet as my regular wall heaters, if not quieter.

Here’s the data nostr:npub1lrjgpa9m2dl6esdah5pq7m005ymwh4glq4aet76q2zlz2f83esfsa2zvrj compiled. He also created a badass PDF with everything broken down for what worked best overall to make your own space heater.

In a nutshell: Braiins OS to underclock, Noctua fan replacement (including PSU). You could also get one of his fan shrouds and put a 6 inch intake filter to quiet it further.
